My book of choice was One Word That Will Change Your Life. My book discussed the importance of choosing one word to have your life revolve around. The book primarily shared stories of people who have used this philosophy. The reason the book emphasizes to only use one word instead of an expression or sentence, which is commonly used as a new years resolution; most everyone makes a new years resolution, but over “50 percent of resolution makers will fail by the end of January” but “[m]ost resolutions are long forgotten by summer” (Wiley 10). The reason is because unique sentences do not occur in everyday life, thus making it very hard to keep your resolution because it is not at the top of your mind. But when you choose one word you have a tendency to remember it much better than you could any sentence because “[o]ne [w]ord is sticky and memorable” (Wiley 11). It is very similar to buying a new car; once you buy your new car you begin to notice your car is everywhere because it becomes personal and is at the top of your mind. Your one word works much like this! When you choose your word you begin to notice it being used regularly around you. The word that you choose should be …show more content…
I followed the instructions and chose my word “results”. I chose this word because I cannot lose sight of the fact that everything I do in life and school has a result! Every result I have either insignificant or significant impacts tomorrow and future opportunities. An example of this is procrastinating on final exams; my lack of studying could have just jeopardized an A in the class if I have a split grade! If this subject was math and I wanted to be an engineer, I just diminished the chance of getting into a top engineering school simply because I didn’t spend an extra thirty minutes studying. Everything has a result! After living with my word for two months, I have found that I am more responsible and on top of my daily
My determination in English 1301 was not the best. I was determined to do all my work to obtain a superb grade, but I would almost always start slacking when i was nearly or halfway done. For example, on my second essay that I was assigned, I started off strong, but halfway strong I just didn’t give it my all. My lack of determination, as well as many other reasons, caused me to fail that essay. My determination helped me to achieve much in this class, but
There are hard work and commitment infused in everything that I commit to; school, friends, and even my dog, Chloe. In school, studying daily and requesting feedback are essential to receiving distinguished honors. Without someone to push the neighborhood to do activities together, it does not happen very often. Chloe is a work in progress, but she is always there for you to cheer you up. When doing schoolwork at home, I take my time to make sure that it is accurate and well-done. Chloe may be a troublemaker, but she is loving and sweet and makes my days better. The neighborhood is still a big family, but we are missing the best member, you. Furthermore, hard work in my school work has gotten me to where I am today.
Success is a relative measurement of performance, and a very practical tool in my application to the agreements mentioned in the book, “The Fifth Agreement: A practical guide to self-mastery” authored by Don Miguel Ruiz, Don Jose Ruiz and Janet Mills. The agreements are – Be impeccable with your word, Don’t take anything personally, Don’t make assumptions, Always do your best and Be skeptical, but learn to listen. The agreements helps you make better decisions in life concerning things you would have easily condemned yourself, improve your communication as well as listening skills. They position you to make better buying decisions and less likely to fall for investment because you will simply focus on asking straight and direct questions. I begin this essay by bringing to my reading audience, how these agreements or values have guided me in my academic pursuit as regards success. It is a comparative study of a previous state of my academics and another stage of my life.
One word. Seven letters. Success. As I close the door on my high school years and open the door of my college career, I aspire to be involved in the community of my university and excel in academics the same way I did while in high school. I want to collaborate with my fellow colleagues in order to succeed in college and come to the ultimate goal of graduating VCU and going into my dentistry career. All my hard work and dedication in schoolwork during my high school career has prepared me to face any task at hand until it is done to the best of my ability. I’ve never been the one to slack off at any task that I am placed upon and I’m not going to start now as I encounter a new journey in my life. As I get closer to my goal, it only makes me
Hinder, prevent, stop and block are all the words that have affected my life since I was child. My childhood had a rough upbringing, this was the time in my life that I truly understood the meaning of conflict. My father moved away from my mother when I was an infant, so you can assume that I didn’t know my father. He moved for the right reason, so we can come to the land of the free and the home of the brave. I was born and raised in Douala, Cameroon by my mother, I never knew or remembered meeting my father. I only knew that he existed through pictures, and the occasional phone calls from America. I only share this story because this physically and emotionally shape my life. When I finally moved to America with no word of English, at the
The end of school came eventually, and I abandoned dreams of the sixth grade. Luckily, I was transferring to another elementary school, but this offered me little consolation. Only dummies have to repeat a grade.
Change can often be a difficult thing for everyone to accept. No matter how big or small, sadly many of us fear it. The worry in change can be seen evidently in that friend unsure of his future after high school, or that family member who stumbles when asked what they would like to eat, only to order the same thing they have ordered the last 10 times. From moving to another city, to ordering a different meal at your favorite restaurant, everyone will have that important date with change. The difference is in how each person decides to handle it. Some like to walk her to the door and give her a kiss goodnight, some even refuse to accept it’s happening, and some don’t even show up. I am one of those people, emailing that “I just can’t make

We're constantly reading about NASA's recent discoveries. But, has there ever been a discovery they neglected to tell the public about? Significance explores this idea as it follows the events of a recent scientific discovery that could have irreversible effects on the planet.
In my life, I have been exposed to a challenge called change. Change can occur in many different ways and is dealt with in many different ways. I have come to the awareness that change can be the deepest of all things. I always thought that change occurred when you moved to a state or when you lost someone real close to you. Those are a challenge to change, yes, but change doesn’t have to occur over a climactic incident. It can just appear overnight when your brain winds up when it’s time to do something different. Even with friends that you used to have and know that move on. For example, most of my friends from elementary school, I don’t even talk to them anymore.
Periodically while surfing the internet I encounter a page entitled "Books That Changed My Life", with a list of books that purportedly changed the life of the author. I am always irritated by these pages, because I never see any evidence that the books had actually changed the life of the author. In fact, for most of these pages a more appropriate title would have been "Books that I really, really liked a lot." Occasionally, it might have been called "Books that influenced my thinking," but I'm reluctant to refer to that as having changed one's life.
There have been very few events throughout my lifetime that I feel have impacted or inspired me with such noteworthiness and that I know will change my outlook on the world and affect me forever. One of those events occurred when I traveled to Portugal, my parent’s homeland. From this excursion in 2007, I learned the importance of family, most importantly the distant kind. It provided me with a totally different perspective on the world and how large and extended one’s family can really be; even across cultures and continents. I felt so fortunate learning this lesson at a young age and growing to appreciate the ideals I was brought up with as a child. The family I have in Portugal has always been there; however, their faces have aged and
For years, I have wanted to visit the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum. My youngest son had been there and was immensely touched by this. Therefore, I determined this assignment would be the perfect opportunity for me to visit and in turn write about it.
*Tough Love* Obstacles and hardships are real. Lack, fear, and scarcity are some of the difficulties we face and overcome. Relationships, finances, and appearance are tested. How is your self worth? Anchor your love through something tangible and practical. Make a commitment to yourself and love itself. Look back at the timeline of what you have achieved and recognize yourself for those accomplishments. Be patient. Chances are, you are learning the practical steps to fulfilling a bigger vision and mission. Let love and pleasure and the senses be your discipline.
Carol Burnett once stated, "Only I can change my life, no one can change it for me." Many people struggle to accept the fact that our lives are based on the decisions and actions we make. As humans, we tend to blame those around us on how our life turns out. In high school, students believe that changing your life will take too long and that everything will be okay. In fact, it is best to change your life in high school. If a student from St. Teresa was asked about what they were gonna change this year, most likely the majority of them would say that they want to improve their grades. Personally, every year I strive to improve my grades each year to reach my potential and become as most educated as I can. This year, I want to improve on a lot of things. My three most desired improvements are to increase my GPA to at least a 3.5, improve my relationship with my family, and also improve my soccer skills to benefit my team.
