In The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas the child in the cellar represents the difference between the lower class and the upper class. In this short story a utopian society is depicted. People in this society are happy, intelligent, mature, and are well cared for. Omelas is described as a joyous city filled with people who are truly happy. “They were not simple folk, you see, they were happy” (Le Guin, 1). But, there is a reason why everyone is so happy.
