Online communities on Tumblr and elsewhere are leading people into dark places that weren’t there before. People are self-identifying with depression. They are confusing their normal and commonplace emotions and feelings of sadness with this idea that they cannot come out of this dark place in which they are in. Rather than seeking help from loved ones or medical professionals, they go to these online communities to be understood, but to be understood, you must be accepted. This is leading young people, especially females, to cut wrists and perform other instances of self-harm, and take pictures to document their feelings. To further their acceptance, they put quotes like “So it’s okay for you to hurt me, but I can’t hurt myself?” and “I want …show more content…
“People use the word ‘depression’ if they can’t find their keys, or if they've had a fight with their mother or father, or if they’ve had an argument with their boyfriend or girlfriend, if they didn’t make the school team or didn’t do well on an exam,” says adolescent psychiatry expert Dr. Stan Kutcher. “When we use the word ‘depression’ for every negative emotional state, the word loses its meaning.” If people are overusing the term “depression” to describe normal, everyday sadness, it takes away from those who actually suffer from this disease. As a person who has both a grandmother, a cousin, and multiple friends who suffer from depression, I feel as though this term is offensive. The people in my life take regularly prescribed medications from their doctors or see therapists on a weekly basis to help them deal with their issues that they cannot normally deal with on their own as most people can. When they are suffering from depression, they cannot bring themselves out of their sadness and feel better. People who use the term depression to feel connected and like they belong in Tumblr’s world of dark poetry and romantic art do not truly understand what it is like to feel depressed, and although they may need help, social media is not the way to do
“Every time I close my eyes, it’s like a dark paradise.” Quotes much like this one found on the popular social media site Tumblr are beautiful and sad at the same time. Young adults use sites like Tumblr to glorify their pain as a way to cope with it. Much of social media today is filled with stories of triumph and stories of loss all focused on one specific mental disorder: depression. Young adults today are becoming increasingly aware of theirs and other’s depressive states and are more willing to talk about it. The disease has become more accepted in today’s society. In conjunction with this trend, teenagers are being diagnosed with major depression more rapidly than in past decades. Depression is not as uncommon as it used to be. So, how
“Recent data estimate the overall prevalence of depression at about 11.1% of the American population, or nearly 35 million individuals (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011). A predictive models suggest that up to 50% of the population will experience at least one episode of depression during their lives” (Life Extension, 2014). Depression has negatively affected the lives of many individuals throughout the world. Look around you there may even be someone close to you that is demonstrating signs of its stifling affects. Depression does not discriminate with its suffocating
I do not understand why we would control who could attend a community college in the first place. The community college is a resource that serves communities and the four-year university system in many different ways, from continuing education to general education classes community colleges cater to the needs of every student to a degree. To think about limiting this resource is to deny someone an education and that is not how the U.S. was founded. Granted we are working towards free higher education through programs like the Tennessee Promise, but college is obtainable for the most part through financial resources that students have available. College is often times a barrier enough for students, but to begin limiting it to certain groups
In today’s global economy, businesses and corporations are faced with challenges to stay competitive. They struggle to find trained employees to keep their production and services at peak performance. States also struggle to maintain and raise the standard of living with poverty and crime on the rise. During these difficult times, high school students are overwhelmed with decisions regarding their post- secondary education because of the exorbitant price of attending four year colleges. Often competitive and qualified high school graduates defer attending school simply because of the cost. The state of Tennessee has not only identified these issues but has also put a plan in place to combat them: their Tennessee Promise, a program which guarantees high school graduates access to community colleges free of charge. Every state in the Unites States should participate in programs similar to the Tennessee Promise Program ensuring free community college tuition in order to improve the quality of living in each state, to provide qualified workers for specialized jobs, and to allow students to either be debt free after their two-year degree or much less in debt after finishing their four-year program.
It has been normalized in societies to the point that if someone does not have depression, that person is the one considered weird. Now, people are self-diagnosing themselves with depression moreover, any other mental health problems, and have included the word depression in their vocabulary using the term very loosely. While some may think it is acceptable to say “I am so depressed” or “I have depression” over trivial matters, in reality is can be very offensive towards people who are actually diagnosed with depression. On her personal blog, Rebecca Chamaa addresses this issue saying, “The word depression has become so overused by people that I can no longer tell when someone is referring to the mental illness, or is having a bad day” (It Is

The reason catharsis fails to effectively resolve anger and hatred lies in the fact that information, once posted, remains as a constant reminder that leads them back to the source of their negativity (Bushman). During a study on Tumblr and its influence on adolescent mentality, researchers found evidence that the negative content found in Tumblr blogs correlated to more negative mentality (Cavazos-Rehg). These posts often contained ideas of self-loathing, depression, anxiety, and loneliness. Unsurprisingly, these posts correlated to many individuals’ mental health to decline in response to viewing them on their ordinary feed (Cavazos-Rehg). Nevertheless, negative posts that pertain to mental illness still have a widespread presence on social media and have caused adolescents to use finstagram as a means of reciprocating this negativity. Compared to ordinary Instagram accounts, finstagram accounts post content much more frequently. This greater number of posts per day results from the shared attitude of finstagram users and their ideology to rebel against the standard social norms of real Instagram, where users typically limit their online activity to one or two posts a day. Active finstagram users have bred a culture where not only do they allow multiple posts a day, but actually welcome it
We will use two different types of primary research to help aid in the creation of our video. First, we will research videos containing reenactments of community conferencing which can facilitate ideas to extrapolate from to make a video of our own. It is important to analyze the videos to see if there is a certain technique that can be used to accurately depict community conferencing. Also, we will look to see which videos are more popular and analyze what they do differently so that a video we make will gain high popularity as well. It is important to make a video which highlights aspects of the Key Bridge Foundation to make people want to donate towards this organization rather than other community conferencing organizations. Another primary research we will be doing is a survey to the students of the University of Maryland.
The state department of education providing funding for an experimental online school will drastically change the lifestyles of the next generation of students. Although academically, the results may not differ, the social lives of these students will. Going to school and seeing other students on a daily basis is beneficial because the interaction between students and teachers teaches us life qualities. This issue shouldn't be put into place because the next generation of students won't have an interesting social life, it will be harder to get a job because lack of communication skills, and they won't learn the importance of team work and leadership.
As defined by Merriam Webster, crowdsourcing is the practice of obtaining needed services, ideas, or content by soliciting contributions from a large group of people, and especially from the online community, and not from traditional employees or suppliers (Merriam-Webster). The influence the internet has over crowdsourcing exists because, the inquirer does not have to pay a large workforce to generate new ideas. They simply make the challenge they are facing available for review over the world-wide web. This action brings in large groups with new ideas to help answer these questions. The internet is instrumental in generating a force of unpaid labor to help advance many causes. Without the internets billions of users, proponents of attracting
Each high school student is different from the next; each has their own dreams, needs, and learning styles. I am one of the many high school students that needed a better school system to fit my needs. That is why I chose online schooling. Online school has been great for me because I can focus on my health, I can take courses relevant to my needs, and work towards a career.
In 2012, 12% of teen girls and 4% of teen males said that they experienced a major depression outburst within the past six months. Depression is the most common chronic illness and many people are accused as victimizing themselves (Wade). Those who turn to social media for support usually do not find it but are instead treated as a freak or as a person looking for attention (A2z). With 200,000 depression blogs it is hard to log on to Tumblr and not see signs of depression and self-harm on your dashboard. Instead of living in the moment, the blogs dread on things in the past and rarely show any sign of happiness in the life of the creator. On the other hand, Tumblr has realized the harm that the blogs pose to those suffering and have created anti-suicide blogs where bloggers can write to the creator and attempt to get help. Still, the anti-suicide blogs would not be necessary if the showing of the depression images were not glorified in the first place (Dewey).
Every community or race has their origin. It has become a norm for people to move from one place to another in search of better jobs, education and among other things. In the recent past, migration has been caused by political instability. Consequently, this made people flee from their countries in search of peace and tranquility. In this essay, I am going to discuss my origin and history of my community.
For this fall semester, the school requires each students to be a volunteer or participate in helping children, I choose to help the kids in Saint Joan of Arc catholic church. I feeling proud of myself for being helpful to this community by working in the youth room. Working with children seems easy but actually it’s not. By working with them I have gained many necessary skill that would be important later on in my life. The journey isn’t long but I have learned a lot.
For the service learning project, I teamed up with three of my classmates to volunteer at a lady’s conference at Imani Restoration Centre church (IRCC) on the 16th of September, 2017. IRCC is a non-profit organization which is a Kenyan community founded that focuses on bringing African immigrants together to support and learn the things of God. Samuel Mwangi, the senior pastor of IRCC, said that through the counseling sessions that he holds at the church every Thursday, he discovered that most ladies go through the same challenges. Therefore, he thought it would be great for him to organize a lady’s conference, so that ladies could come together to share and support each other (Personal communication, September, 16, 2017)
