Open educational resources (OER) are any resources available at little or no cost that can be used for teaching, learning or research (Educause, 2010). In 2008, South Africa experienced widespread load shedding affecting the domestic and industrial electricity users as the result of the lack of capacity by Eskom, the South African power utility. South Africa is an energy intensive country and as such production and raw materials processing are energy intensive activities. The coal is the major primary energy source and the abundance of coal reserves have partly contributed to the unit price of electricity being amongst the cheapest in the world (Department of Minerals and Energy, 2005).
Energy efficiency has become recognised as one of the most effective ways of meeting the demands of sustainable development and has been referred to as the best energy resource. In 2005 the Department of Minerals and Energy published its Energy Efficiency Strategy in support of some of the objectives spelt out in the 1998 White Paper on Energy Policy. The strategy set a national target for energy efficiency improvement of 12% by 2015.
South Africa’s unprecedented economic growth is one of the factors that have contributed to the country’s current power shortage situation. Building a new power station takes a number of years, and until one or more new power stations are operational, the people of South Africa need to conserve energy resources and use them efficiently. Energy resources
Energy has easily become one of the most important necessities for our everyday lives. Without it we would simply not be able to have transportation or be able to gather any of our other resources that we depend on. If at anytime our energy supply ceases or no longer attainable the results may be horrific. However, it is quite easy to keep this from happening, It is crucial that our current population realize the importance of sustaining our present non-renewable resources. An examination of all the present energy issues and human impacts of energy conservation along with the a resource plan will show importance of energy
With the support of my peers and mentors, I have decided to pursue my dream of doing research in energy efficiency of utilities. I believe that with my passion and curiosity about the field, I would indeed take up much
The stage for a deeper integration of Renewable Energies in the UK was set by a number of these policies which has evolved over the years. These policies however were not delivering maximum efficiency when compared to other policies in other European countries. For instance, the inefficiency of some of the policy mechanisms when compared to those obtainable in Germany had been severally argued. The Energy White Paper 2003 was largely a response to the future of the UK Energy industry drawing from the failures of these past policy implementations.
There are many potential pathways to decarbonisation, but one in particular covers all the important aspects. This pathway involves having ambitious energy efficiency, which leads to a
Efficiency at a power plant is determined by energy conversion rate. This is rate is measured by the input energy source, in this case coal, in proportion to the output, which is the power generated. The less fuel that is required for power generation, the more efficient it is. Efficiency is very sensitive in relation to the amount of carbon dioxide emitted. A single percentage increase in the efficiency of a coal fired power plant yields a 2-3% reduction in the carbon dioxide levels emitted by this plant. The power stations on the upper side on the scale of efficiency may emit up to 40% less carbon dioxide than the average power stations currently installed. The efficiency of power plant improvements include the most cost effective and shortest lead time actions for reducing emissions from coal fired electricity. This is especially true in developing and lower-economy countries
Energy efficiency has several benefits including being good for the environment. However, the biggest benefit is that it saves you money. Home inspectors often look at several things when detailing energy efficiency and its importance. Magnolia Property Consultants examine several things
Energy efficiency helps with a lot of things. Energy efficiency helps climate change, it helps the environment by decreasing power plant outflow so our environment has a decrease of gasses , crude oils , burned coal and fossil fuels.
Army recognized the most cost-effective process was to address energy efficiency first, and then enhance with on-site renewable energy generation. Lighting and building envelope projects were some of the initial efficiency improvements made on the base. These improvements alone made 42% of the projected total energy savings.
Due to the importance of reducing energy consumption from limited energy sources and minimizing environmental impacts, a number of energy-efficiency measures have emerged for Canadian residential buildings in recent years. Provincial and national building energy codes have been
The country of Cameroon is considered a third world country and the production and quality of energy matches this view. Rural Cameroon experiences many black outs and is in constant need of more energy for the population to perform basic tasks such as cooking with greater ease and with a higher knowledge of hygiene. The main issue is the quality of the generated power; this is a result of the method of production and transportation of the power.
There is a great correlation between development and accessibility of electricity. “Excluding South Africa, the entire installed generation capacity of sub-Saharan Africa is only 28 Gigawatts, equivalent to that of Argentina” (World Bank). Providing electricity can lead many investors in sub-Saharan countries and also can generate small business to the local people such as welding, shaving and many more jobs.
Energy efficiency has a variety of benefits: lowering cost on both household and economical levels, reducing demand for energy imports, and fewer greenhouse emissions. Although renewable energy technologies help to accomplish these objectives of reducing the utilization of fossil fuels, the cheapest, and often most immediate, is improving energy efficiency. There are considerable opportunities for improving the efficiency in almost all sectors of the economy, whether it is transport, energy generation, buildings, or industry.
There are plenty of different ways to achieve energy efficiency, such as using renewable energy sources such as solar power and properly designing a house to make the best use of natural light and rainwater as well as heating and cooling.
“Energy efficiency means using less energy to provide the same service.” An example of this is where a LED lightbulb uses less electrical energy than a traditional incandescent lightbulb to produce the same amount of light. The phrase 'energy efficiency' can also be described as any kind of energy-saving measure. (1)
By taking the position as Raj Bhatt, Business Development manager of GE Canada, I am comfortable and confident that energy efficiency is an attractive industry and business opportunity. What makes Raj Bhatt believe that the Energy Efficiency projects will be successful in Canada is that the project helps not only the ESCo, which conducts the performance-based contracting, but also the customers, who are more aware of the benefits of Energy Efficiency project. The Energy Efficiency project will optimize the energy usage, including conservation, use of efficient equipment and off peak usage. Even though the project has required intensive initial capital investment and long payback period, it will
