The words open-minded and tolerance are used often in today’s lexicon when discussing some of the more pressing subjects of the day. However, as Inigo Montoya pointed out in “The Princess Bride”, “I do not think that word means what you think it means”. (Motion Picture, 1987) These are words and concepts that are tossed around without the critical thinking and considering what these concepts entail. By identifying three important attributes and being able to apply them to our own lives, we will be able to understand what being open-minded really means. One of the first most important attributes one can use to approach problems is listening. You need to listen to what the other person has to say without making judgments, “connect with anther
To be open-minded is being open to new cultures and to be accepting of your own. Finding Forrester is a movie about a writer that has been missing for many years. Jamal, who is a basketball player and writer goes up and finds him. They develop a friendship, and Forrester mentors him with his writing.
“The Princess Bride” was one of my mom’s favorite movies when she was little. Because of this, I have seen the movie with her several times. However, I had never read the book. I have always been told that books are better than movies but with this story, I do not agree. I liked the movie much better.
Be receptive, keep and keep an open mind: As a good listener, you much keep an open mind to understand your colleague’s point of view, if different.
Satire with a funny twist. In the novel The Princess Bride, William Goldman satirizes both fairy tales and the standard literary process through his characters and their actions. Westley, a poor farmer, falls in love with the far from perfect maiden, Buttercup, but has to sail away in order to find his fortunes. Years later, Buttercup, thinking that Westley abandoned her, is forcibly engaged to Prince Humperdinck, a cruel and calculating man. Vizzini, Fezzik, and Inigo, three mysterious kidnappers, abduct the princess in hopes of causing war between the great nations of Guilder and Florin. These events and characters mirror those in a common fairy tale, but with many twists to them. The author, William Goldman, uses both his role as the
It’s important to listen to others before making a final decision. He repeated a lot that it’s important to be a good listener. Awareness is important because it causes you to be aware of what’s happening around you. Being aware of things that are going on in your job is important if you want to succeed. Both of these skills are important in life and a job because in order to be successful it’s important to be aware of others and their opinions to be a good leader.
I am a very opened minded person, being open minded allows me to receive criticism and opinions from other people without being disturbed. I believe in a world where everything is changing and new topics are being introduced it is essential to be open minded. This allows for new concepts and ideas to be made in order to advance in the world we are living in today. I believe that if you are not open minded it doesn't let ideas to be passed on, it’s like putting a dam in a river. You stop the flow of ideas, not allowing the world to advance in topics such as in equality. However, i believe that in certain situations it is important to know how to stand your ground and know how to defend your position. I believe i do this, it's important, you're not always going to agree with everybody, such as the way everyone is not going to agree with you.
Open mindedness is an important key to success in life. It takes practice, time, energy and patience to master this skill. But, it is more than worth the effort. Our world is vast and while I can’t promise much I can guarantee you that you will meet more than one person during your lifetime that will not share your religious beliefs, values, political views, etc.
Thus, it is fairly apparent that only a studied confluence of ideologies regarding the proper governing and socializing of people will be the most effective. Moreover, it is necessary for the selected ones that are chosen to incorporate values of tolerance, compassion, and understanding primarily to make room for the other ideologies. Personally, I can make an effort to avoid the ignorance and chaos that lurks outside of my doorway, and attempt to practice those aforementioned virtues in my daily interactions with people.
In today’s society, many tend to claim they are extremely open minded compared to 100 or even 50 years ago, but sadly this is rarely reality. Statements such as “I’m not racist but…” or “I’m not homophobic but…” are almost always followed by something racist or
I’ve always believed that it’s important to keep an open mind when engaging with others, but that sentiment is often misinterpreted to mean that a person should be open to accepting any view differing from their own, which would do more harm than good. Violence has always been prevalent in our world, from the American revolution in the 1700s to the neo-Nazis rallying in our streets as we live and breath. While one might think that accepting everyone’s differing views will bring people together, and lessen the amount of violence in the world, I’m inclined to disagree. In resetting our society, it is essential to acknowledge and respect differing identities and ways of looking at the world, but only when those differences don’t disrespect
Listening is a very complicated skill that many people do not posses. It requires individuals to reflect and to admit to their flaws. In order to communicate effectively it is important to know when to talk and listen. Peterson’s book is an excellent tool to enhance all types of relationships.
it before we make a point or saying what’s on our mind. Although our tendency
“Most of us are brought up with a set of beliefs and values and, throughout our lives, tend to surround ourselves with people who share the same values and beliefs. Therefore, it can be difficult when we 're faced with ideas that challenge our own and, though we may wish to be open-minded, we may struggle with the act of it from time to time.(Positively present)” The problem with being closed minded is they use hostility, prejudice, indifference, and inattention to keep new or different ideas from gaining a foothold. Basically they don’t try to let new ideas or beliefs cross their minds. Also people who are closed minded don’t want to learn or change their opinion on certain beliefs. They like to think they
In the modern Western psychology tolerance is considered from different points of view (Ibadova, 2011): As the value of personality, this creates the basis for peaceful coexistence in society, groups and individuals who have different views and lifestyles. As the attitude, which is the acceptance of the rights of other peoples to behave and think in a different from their own way. This attitude is based on sympathy and similarities, and increases the level of acceptance of originality of others opinions. As a personality trait (personality disposition), which is associated with the Big Five personality traits (Openness to Experience and Agreeableness).
The ability to listen well is an important tool for understanding others. Sadly, very few people know how to listen well. In fact, most people can think of only one or two good listeners in their lives. Listening is not simply agreeing - it is much more. Good listeners are able to better understand and respond to others, complete assignments accurately, settle disagreements before they escalate, and establish rapport with difficult people.
