In the month of August 1939, Adolf Hitler met with the Soviet Union leader, Joseph Stalin, and made an agreement to work with each other to invade Poland, known as the Soviet Non-Aggression Pact. Germany continued to invade other countries, and began WWII. Over the next two years, the Soviet Union invaded Finland, Baltic States, and signed a neutrality pact with the Japanese Empire. Russia and Germany for the next two years did not view each other as enemies, but Hitler had other intentions. Germany had plans to invade the Soviet Union, to remove the Communists and the exterminate the Jewish people that lived there. This plan was known as Operation Barbarossa. Germany prepared greatly for this invasion, and had over three million soldiers attack the Soviet Union on June 22nd, 1941. The Germans were able to overwhelm the Soviet Union, and by mid-July 1941, the Germans were just 200 miles from Moscow. While Germany continued their way towards Moscow, The Soviet Union began to plan their counter offensive. The Red Army was able to stop German from reaching Moscow. This was the first major defeat for the German army, which gave the Soviet Union people hope that they would be able to stop the Germans. On December 7th, 1941, the United States of America entered the war after a surprise attack from the Japanese Empire. Hitler realized that now he would also be fighting the Americans, and began to change his focus from attacking the East to the South of the Soviet Union, in order to protect supplies that were necessary for the German war effort.
