World War II brought devastation, destruction, and death, which scarred history in many ways. However, there were some good moments that shone through the bad like when the Jews were liberated from their camps, or when the Allies won the war. And while World War II may seem like a thing of the past, in reality its impacts on history still remain to this day. Like when Germany captured France during the war the Allies planned an invasion to take back their allied country, if only they knew that it would become one of the most well known invasions talked about to this day. D-Day which was part of Operation Overlord to take back France was one of the many significant events of World War II, it was the biggest seaborne invasion ever, it was a surprise …show more content…
Furthermore, the Atlantic Wall was France’s eastern coast that the Nazi’s heavily fortified in case of a surprise attack from the Allies since Great Britain is located just off of France’s eastern coast. The easiest place to attack the Atlantic Wall would have been in Pas de Calais, the closest point between Great Britain and France. The allies instead chose Normandy, France, because Normandy had two large ports, Cherbourg and Le Havre, which also had sheltered sandy beaches from the prevailing south-west winds. When D-day came around and the Allies invaded Normandy, Hitler did not move his troops from Pas de Calais because he thought there would be another invasion in Pas de Calais and that Normandy was just a distraction. However, Hitler had been fooled, that was not the case, and Germany had been taken by surprise from the attack of the Allies; Operation Overlord was just …show more content…
Some were good, others were not, but all that matters is for us not to repeat history, we cannot change what has already happened, but we can decide what to do now. History is written and taught to teach about what happened so we will not make the same mistakes, but it can also be to entertain, or to tell of great achievements that happened. D-Day falls into the category of great achievements because it brought good things and good achievements even though it was just the start of Operation Overlord it was the day that also started the end of the war in Europe. D-Day achieved things by surprising Germany in an attack, becoming the biggest seaborne invasion ever, and it brought good by ending the Nazi’s rule. All of these things make D-Day a significant date in history, but even as time goes on it will not be forgotten by those who know the
“D-Day”, is considered one of the most significant battles of World War ll. D-Day is also known as the “Battle of Normandy”, or, “Operation Overlord”. The Battle of Normandy began in June 1944, and ended around August 1944. By the end of the war around August 1944, all of France had been cleared of Nazi forces. D-Day is considered a huge factor with the end of World War II and the Nazi Party due them having to push out of France and back into their initial land of Germany. Later on as the Nazi Party was pushed back into Germany, more allied forces collaborated to officially wipe out the Nazi Party in Germany. D-Day was initialized as it was approved by General Dwight D. Eisenhower. After the approval of the general, troops landed on the French coasts to neutralize the Nazi Party and to recover the land.
World War II was one of the most significant wars in history. It is also the deadliest with a death toll of, approximately, 56.4 million; almost half of which were Soviet fatalities. Furthermore, the amount of people who met their demise during the time of this war is absolutely devastating. World War II could have been avoided if there was better cooperation and communication across the globe.
On June 6, 160,000 allied troops landed along a fifty mile stretch of land to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircrafts helped on the invasion. Once on the beach they faced death, without any shields or protection for two hundred yards, due to the sacrifices each man made that day Fortress Europe had been breached.
D-Day, formally known as Operation Overlord, was one of the many monumental battles of World War 2 (The Reader’s Digest 298). It was led by American general Dwight Eisenhower, who was appointed the commander of the American Allied forces in 1944 (“D-Day”), In order to trick the Germans, the Allies had to put many plans into place before Operation Overlord could actually happen. Before the initial attack on the beaches of Normandy took place, the Allies had many plans to fool the Germans. They took war ships, tied balloons to the back of the ship, and sailed up the coast to another side of France. Trailing the
The Allies also knew this; the Allies had to do the impossible landing of troops at Normandy. The invasion would have to be the biggest amphibious invasion in history. Even the famous dictator Napoleon could not move his troops through the Channel; nor could Julies Caesar. The record for the Allies was better; the Allies had three successful amphibious assaults (North Africa, Sicily, and Salerno). There was one catch: those coastlines were not fortified… Normandy would be heavily fortified. The Allies were ready to send in their troops to protect their freedom while the Nazis were ready to defend their fortress. Whoever won, it was going to be a bloody battle…
World War II and the battles that were fought during it help shape the world we live in. Without D-day and other crucial battles that led to the demise of Hitler's reign the world would be different. If Hitler had never have been defeated, his power could have expanded from Europe to the US. The government systems and powerhouse of the world would different from how they are now. This would result in unfamiliar economics and administration. D-day and the Allied success lead to the world we live in today, the world where lives lost in battle to defeat Hitler were not in vain, because his mass murder agenda was put to a stop.
World War II was and most likely will be the largest and most great war to ever appear on this earth. Although it brought so much death and destruction with a striking total of over 60 million deaths, it is also the deadliest conflict to ever have happened as well. Out of all the horror that was WWII it did create a lot of advancements like the boost in advancements in technology. As well there were great social changes in the United States. Also there were significant boosts in medical sciences. There were economical advancements in the United States. Finally there were advancements in world peace never seen before. Though war should never be defined as good, World War II created many beneficial advancements for the United States and the world.
The invasion of D-Day also known as Operation Overlord was located on the beaches of Normandy, France (Hine, 19). Germany had taken France and Paris fell on May of 1940 which was the most important reason to take back France from Germany (Groff, 294).The Allied forces invaded Normandy, France because Germany has taken control of most parts of France and most of Europe too. Germany also started to thrive as an empire with all the territory it has gained during world war two (Marrin,
Firstly, France was Nazi territory before D-Day, giving them access to easy, and safe transportation. Reinforcement of men or weapons could be transported easily through train lines or via air without worry of being attacked by allied forces, as they would be well guarded from departure to arrival. The allies, on the other hand, had to land on the beach with a high chance of being killed upon arrival, then traverse the battlefield and continue fighting until their objective was complete or die in the process. Although Nazi soldiers had to battle and die also, they didn’t face the
On much smaller scales, the Battle of Normandy was also quite important. The depressed Europeans, who had been living in the shadow of war for the past four years, were delighted by the news of victory. In
World War II was a very important event in American history, but as bad as war is or seems to be there always seems to have better outcomes in the end. By the Japanese bombing Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 and bringing America into the war it opened the eyes of all Americans to the problems not only domestically but internationally and the biggest problem that was discovered after the completion of World War II was the level of social equality around the world. It had been a problem that had plagued the world for many years but the atrocities that brought about by the war coupled with the ever growing eye of the media caused for greater concern in the light of social equality in the world.
June 6, 1944. The world has been at war for almost 5 years. The Axis Powers have occupied France and a lot of Europe. The USSR is pushing the Germans out of Russia and back towards Germany. The Allies are preparing to invade and take back Europe and defeat the Axis. The invasion starts with a mix of British and American paratroopers being dropped behind enemy lines to take important and over 100,00 soldiers are preparing to launch one of the largest sea invasions of all time. The soldiers are a mix of British, Canadian, and United States origin. The 5 beaches being attacked are codenamed Utah, Gold, Sword, Juno, and Omaha. In the end, the invasion as a whole turned out to be a success on every beach. There were many reasons for this success,
The Allied Forces took much time in plotting the invasion of the beaches of Normandy, France to establish a sure victory, as they’d be sacrificing many troops and resources. They also skillfully and masterfully concocted a planned hoax by deciding they would place dummy landing sites all around the eastern coast, set up dozens (hundreds, even) tanks to bluff an invasion of the wrong site. They even planned to organize a faux radio network, that told
World War II was one of the biggest wars known. The things people have done, the things that have happened in that war were so graphic that it has ruined the thoughts of people forever. There were so many causes of WWII; even just one would’ve been enough to make it happen. It has affected the lives of so many people, not only people that experienced it, but individuals who have looked upon it. It was such a powerful event with things to be learned. But, it all starts and ends somewhere; and to know that you need the causes and effects.
World War II has been considered one of the worst things to ever occur in history. Violence, death and aggression took place in the 1930s and 1940s in certain European nations. German leader, Hitler played an important, yet a very big role during this time. With the rise and domination of fascism in Germany and Italy, the goal was to maintain peace, established by the Treaty of Versailles ended up in major disaster. World War II began with the poor economic conditions in Europe after World War I and the confrontation of clashing forms of governments and in the end it brought about positive and negative changes of the world. World War II began on September 1st, 1939 when Germany invaded Poland; this invasion led to the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor, The Great Depression, and the Holocaust.
