Over a hundred years ago, one event created chaos among gender roles and here are some of the initial factors of how rights for women started as a predicament which later began to evolve into a much larger problem that involved many people around the nations. Over the course of history, many issues had change the world to what it has become today. Many problems led to social, economic, and other changes. One small event is able to cause more obstacles, which eventually leads to larger complications. Throughout time women and their rights have varied among where they are living and the people that surround them. Some of the major changes with women’s rights is giving them the right to vote, reproductive rights, and the right to work for equal pay. Another thing that varies throughout time is women’s roles. For example 100 years ago the only jobs that women could have was to either be a housewife, nurse, or a teacher. Until about 1910, women didn’t really fight for their rights and what they could do. Guys are always seen to be the stronger gender or more important gender so the girls are always the ones to get in trouble if they are to do something not expected or inappropriate in the male's eyes. In modern day, many fail to realize we were not always equal as a nation. In the past, women were treated much differently. They were viewed as inferior to men and were denied many rights that we have now. Women struggled to achieve their civil rights.

The reason why women were so discriminated against was the threat of reproduction. Women who were subjected the most to discrimination were the ones without children or husbands since they were understood as possible prostitutes.

The definition of gender roles is a set of societal norms dictating what types of behavior is generally considered acceptable based on the gender of a person. Additionally, if you don’t seem to accept this standard, there can be huge consequences. For example, in India, women are viewed as a burden and a “extra mouth to feed.” Her status promotes the idea that men can treat them in a subdued manner. If they don’t comply to these requirements, then a woman is murdered by her husband or his family by being set alight by a flammable liquid, which is usually known as bride burning. Herland, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, also uncovers the harsh inequality of women. Gender roles shouldn’t be real and they were forced on us by society.

Women were always seen as being inferior or “weak” to men; that they couldn’t do the same things men did because they lacked the physical strength to do so. Because women were physically inferior, it became easy to oppress them due to this difference in power.

Feminist perspective developed with the ideology that women face large amounts of inequalities in a patriarchal society. They aimed to address and rid the social world of this oppression of women by men. According to Bishop, (2015) “oppression occurs when one group of people use different forms of power to keep another group down in order to exploit them. The oppressor uses the power; the oppressed are exploited” (p. 133-134). Oppression must be by individual experience and not grouped into being the same for all. This includes understanding the original ideology of feminist theory being critiqued as only considering the experiences of middle class, white women. That black women, of lower class experienced oppression much different from the other women. Women are oppressed, thus has to be understood in a different construct that women are similar in some sources, experience of oppression but also experience oppression very differently from one individual to another. Feminist theories have further been expanded do its continuation throughout society and decades to encompass many more issues and arenas than just men and women relationships. Now it seeks to understand and address oppression based on culture, race, class, etc and not only for women but for all. Therefore, Bishop (2014) outlines five components that seem common to all forms of oppression and serve to maintain its presence in society.

The role and depiction of women in society is a particularly volatile subject. This is especially true when considering the time frame of the early-to-mid 20th century; it is also accurate through the perspective of classical Hollywood cinema. Feminist film theorists claim that the portrayal of women in cinema is only such as to please the spectator in a shallow, physical way. On the other hand, the theorists claim, males are given a much more active role in film, usually in the role of the protagonist. While this is certainly true in many cases, it is not the only manner in which the female gender is portrayed in classical Hollywood cinema. In films such as Howard Hawks’ His Girl Friday (1940) and Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo (1958), it can be observed that the women portrayed have a much bigger role than to just be gawked at by the audience, and that these portrayals are representative of the effort to extinguish traditional gender roles of early-20th-century American society . At the same time, there are messages being communicated that speak exactly to these gender roles, namely that females must be subordinate housewives. Through these mixed signals, these films elucidate the polarizing issue of the role of women in society.
