In this world, oppression of women is found almost everywhere. Women were, and are still, treated as less than men, and sometimes not even as humans. Around the globe, women are killed or mutilated every day to fit a standard that makes them more appealing to men. In China, women’s feet used to be bound so that their feet were only about three inches long. Having bound feet made it hard for them to walk, and therefore, made them dependent on men. The process of having their feet bound was painful, yet women quietly suffered for over a hundred years. In certain places in Africa, women’s genitals were circumcised because it was believed that it would make them more desirable as wives. It was also a way for the men to control the women because they could check to see if the scar-tissue was broken. Muslim-dominated countries oppress women through honor killings, which promote a patriarchal society, are said to save the honor of a family, and may be performed without proof; unfortunately, these acts of oppression are not limited to Muslim-dominated countries.
Members of the Islamic culture tend to live in patriarchal societies where the peace is kept by men monitoring the actions of women very closely (honor). They monitor them because it is believed that to maintain peace in society, women’s sexuality must be controlled (Ilkkaracan). Everything about a woman is controlled by men including who they marry, how they present themselves, and their sexuality. In the article “Islam Condones Honor Killings,” the author, Syed Mirza, explains that “Islam considers women as the sources of great shame” and that they are an “object of shame that needs to be covered.” Their fathers and brothers take great care to hide the females and they have the responsibility of ensuring a daughter or sister’s virginity, which is eventually passed onto the husband once she is wed (honor). In a lot of cases, a man pays a bride price to marry the girl and assumes that once he pays this price, he controls everything about her (Ilkkaracan). When women attend the mosque, “they are sent to the back, or behind curtains, or pushed into basements or balconies, for they are considered . . . sexual triggers that may ignite male passions” (Fatah).
