The Woman of Power
If I had the opportunity to meet anyone in the world, I would want to meet Oprah Winfrey. Why in the world would I want to meet Oprah Winfrey? The answer is simple; clearly she is in many opinions the most influential person in the world, her insight is incredible, and her story is touching to all who follow her. Despite the fact she grew up in a rough environment, she took her devastating experience and shared it with the rest of the world, hoping to change it for the better. Oprah has altered the perceptions of millions of people around the nation and even the world, and if I could meet her in person I would tell her how much she has changed my life for the better, and how grateful I am for her existence.
I bet you’re wondering why is this woman such a big deal, what is her story, and why is she such a great influence on the world? Well, I’m going to tell you why I honor this woman so much. At an early age, Oprah was molested by family members, and it took a disastrous toll on her both emotionally and physically. By the age of 14, she was sexually active and became pregnant with her first baby boy. Tragically, her baby died due to the fact that he was born prematurely. She was voted “Most Popular Girl” and soon after joined her high school speech team. Oprah was most successful and even won awards for her dramatic interpretation. At 17, she won the “Miss Black Tennessee” beauty pageant, and as a result attracted the attention of the local black radio station. Her career choice was obvious by this time, she was very successful at public speaking and captivating her audience. She took on the media and showed the world what she was made

In the younger life of Oprah Winfrey, Oprah was a smart brave young kid. In her younger years of being born she was raised by her mom for 2 years then she was forced to live with her grandmother and her grandmother taught her the basics. Her grandmother taught her how to read, write, talk. Her grandmother was with her through all while her mother was working in Milwaukee Wisconsin and her dad living in Nashville Tennessee. Then a few letters she was forced to live with her dad then she was thrown back to live with her mother. Her mother was good now because she had a home and a job where she could keep a roof over her head. They weren't rich they were very poor and they didn't have much she skipped meals she was really small. Then as she got older around 9 years old she was sexually abused by a 19 year old cousin and a family friend. Oprah was a pioneer of successful women in the entertainment industry. “Oprah created a TV network called Oxygen that was geared towards women”(Harmon).Oprah created successful companies and channels that employed many and became well known in American society. She represented a strong, black, female leader who had wild success, inspiring women everywhere. Oprah Winfrey grew up in a world of adversity, despite her early accomplishments as a gifted child. She began her career in 1976, when she moved to Baltimore to join WJZ-TV News. (Oprah Winfrey Biography, 2011) Her empathetic personality made her many friends, and she was invited to Chicago in 1984 to begin hosting a half-hour morning program. Within a year, she had turned the AM Chicago radio show into the most important radio show in town, and was soon expanded to a full one-hour format. During this time, Oprah struggled with the stereotype that as a black woman she would always be an assistant anchor on the news, or simply a well-spoken host of a talk show. This could not have been further from the truth, as Oprah was able to create her own format for excellence in all forms of media, not simply talk or television. The show was renamed the Oprah Winfrey Show in 1985, and kept that name for twenty-five years until she retired the show in 2010.
Oprah became pregnant, and gave birth to a baby. Sadly the baby was premature and died shortly after birth. Due to all the trouble Oprah was getting into her mother sent her to live with her strict father in Nashville, TN. At the ages of fifteen and sixteen Oprah began making strides to better her life. In high school Oprah was an honor student, voted most popular, joined her high school speech team, got a job working at a grocery store, and won a four year scholarship to Tennessee State University. At the age of seventeen Oprah entered and won the Miss Black Tennessee beauty pageant. By winning this pageant a local radio sought out Oprah and asked her to do the news part time while she was still in high school. If the opportunity were to be given to meet and have a conversation with one person in human history it would be Michelle Obama. She serves as a role model for many young black girls including myself. Seeing a strong black woman in power was just what I needed while I was growing up, someone like myself in the media, someone that I could aspire to be. Therefore, if I were given the opportunity to have a 30-minute conversation with anyone; it would undoubtedly be her.

I consider her role model because despite the hardship she faced in her young childhood, she never gave up and currently represents a strong independent woman through her own show. Many people call her “a modern successful woman” and a powerful celebrity because she not only has her own views on topics but she also invites other individuals onto her show to help spread their view on the world through media. Beyond her professional career, she is a great philanthropist and helps unprivileged children around the world.
