Ordinarily, Ellen and I spoke on the phone several times a day. One day while I was at work, she called to tell me in an excited voice that she was watching the tail end of the Oprah Winfrey Show; a syndicated television tabloid talk show. The show was almost over, nevertheless, Ellen elaborated that a woman from the Midwest was reunited on air with her brother who lived in England, after being separated for more than twenty-five years. I could only imagine such a wonderful reunion with Papa, how my heart wished for it. Oddly enough, at dinner that evening, I mentioned to Vince that Ellen watched the Oprah Winfrey show reunite families. “Oh, that reminds me,” Vince interrupted as I spoke, “I tape-recorded the show for you. I was startled that the agency was practically located in my backyard and considered an omen.

I couldn’t wait for the end of my workday when Vince and I could discuss if and how to move forward in my search for Papa. I was too timid to phone the Private Investigator and confident that the effort would be costly. Nevertheless, as always, Vince helped me search for courage, deep inside my soul, assuring me that the price to pay for reaping the potential benefit of emotional healing for me was not an issue. If I decided to move forward, Ellen was supportive, but apprehensive of the outcome. She still had no interest in joining my search for Papa and was baffled that I was so focused on my desire to contact him. Since Mom had been estranged from her father for many years, she understood my desire to connect with mine, although cautioned me against getting my heartbroken if Papa was located.

Without hesitation, I telephoned the Rat Dog Dick Detective PI Agency the next morning and hired them to find Mr. Thierry Adriaan de Ruyter. After signing a few documents and paying a retainer fee to commence the search, I provided the agency with Papa’s last known address, according to the information Joe Di Maria made available in 1969, at the Oaks Trailer Court in Hope, Arkansas, his Post Office Box in Marion, Arkansas, driver’s license number and birthdate, additionally I divulged that Papa was a patient at Baylor Heart and Vascular Hospital.
