Oprah Winfrey: Personality Analysis Using the Cognitive-Experiential Domain
Oprah Winfrey was born January 29, 1954, and is the richest African American of the 20th century (Wikipedia, Oprah Winfrey, 2007). Oprah’s talk show is the highest rated talk show in television history with an astonishing 8.4 million viewers daily (Doyle, 2007). Numerous assessments rank Winfrey as the most influential and powerful woman in the world, with a net worth over half a billion dollars (Henley, 2007). In my research paper, I will be discussing the personality of Winfrey using the cognitive-experiential domain. Winfrey now views the strict standards of discipline and guidelines set forth by her grandmother and later by her father and stepmother as defining factors in who she has become (Lowe, 1998). Oprah’s father once said, “There are those who make things happen. There are those who watch things happen, and there are those who do not know what is happening” (Lowe, 1998, p.15). Oprah chose to be one of those who made things happen.
Oprah worked at AVOL Radio reading the news on the air before graduating from high school. She was paid $100 per week, a good pay for a youthful 16-year-old (Lowe, 1998). This was the beginning of Oprah’s illustrious career. Oprah graduated in 1971 from East Nashville High School (Lowe, 1998). She won a scholarship to Tennessee State University and had earned a degree in speech and drama by age 21 (Lowe, 1998). Oprah was the first African-American woman to anchor the news at Nashville’s WTVF-TV (Mair, 1994).
In 1985, the nationally syndicated Oprah Winfrey show began (Mair, 1994). Since then, Oprah has become one of the most influential women in American history. Her statements greatly affect the nation and her kindness affects the world. Oprah made a simple statement that she would not be eating a hamburger for a while only to be sued by the beef industry due to the tremendous drop in beef sales after her statement (Lowe, 1998).
