The quote by Oprah Winfrey “Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity,” is a quote that encapsulates her opinion on how people reach success in life. It would seem that, to her, luck is not necessarily something good or bad happening at random to a person. Instead it is a culmination of work towards something and the seemingly random occurrence of favorable circumstances. I agree with what Oprah Winfrey is trying to convey in her quote. For example, the company you want to work for hiring at the time you are actively looking for a job. Another example would be Oprah Winfrey's personal experiences. These are simple examples to show the truth behind Oprah Winfrey's quote. The first thing that comes to my mind when reading the quote
Oprah Winfrey is an African American woman who made it big through her daytime talk show. While being famously known for her large-scale giveaways and interviews with celebrities, Oprah is also a philanthropist and plays a role in American history. Oprah Winfrey is important to American history because she established the ‘Oprah Effect’ (1), has started many charitable organizations (4), broke down barriers supporting gay rights as a Christian (8), and having her own hit TV talk show (2). In doing this, she has helped people learn to accept others who are different (2).
More specifically, the circumstances and factors that lead to success. In today’s society, success is seen as something brought unto people wholly and entirely through a singular person’s abilities and effort. That line of thinking is inherently flawed, seeing as “success is not a random act. It arises out of a predictable and powerful set of circumstances and opportunities,” (Gladwell 155). Where and when a person is born matters.
Everyone loves their family in one way or another. Although some people may find it hard to love an annoying sibling or bossy adult, they still love them anyway. In the story "Home" by Hena Kahn, the main character Aleena learns that love can be hard but you should never stop showing it towards your family. By using character interactions and plot throughout the story, Aleena learns this and realizes that she should be nicer to her little brother. At the beginning of the story, the theme is introduced with plot and character interactions as Aleena is visiting her little brother for the first time.
Another key position in the 2016 presidential election is gun control. Hillary Clinton wants to expand background checks to more gun sales by closing the gun show and internet sale loopholes. She also wants to keep guns away from the severally mentally ill, domestic abusers, and other violent criminals. Donald trump on the other hand wants to focus on improving mental health treatment to catch mass shooters before a crime. He also wants to focus on fixing the “broken” system, instead of expanding background checks.
“Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.”- Lou Gehrig
St. Patrick’s Day has been known through the years as being lucky, a time for partying and wearing green. People think its lucky mainly because people assume that leprechaun bring good luck and sometimes think of four leaf clovers. It has been known as a party time because you hang out with friends, drink and so on. The color people think about on St. Patrick’s Day is green. This first paragraph will be about luck and how it is involved in St. Patrick’s Day.
Participants in the action, some of them in parts that are minor and seem insignificant, contribute one by one the indispensable stitches which make the pattern, and contribute them not knowing; that is to say, they act when they do not know the truth of the situation in which they act, this truth being known, however, to us who are spectators." (The Brevity of Friar Laurence, 850) The idea that Fortune dictates the course of mankind dates back to ancient times. Those writers of the medieval world incorporated the goddess Fortune into Christianity and made her God's servant, responsible for adding challenges to our lives so that we would see the importance of giving up our tumultuous earthly lives to God. The most influential treatise on the theme of Fate was The Consolation of Philosophy, written by the scholar Boethius (A.D. 475-525). Written while he awaited execution, it is a dialogue between himself and his guide 'Philosophy', who explores with him the true nature of happiness and fate, and leads him to hope and enlightenment. Here is an excerpt from Book IV:
Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell represents success as grabbing opportunities whenever there is one present and making the most out of it. These two pieces of literature
Imagine where in a perfectly normal world, the unthinkable can come to life yet peopple don’t find it odd that a dead enormous man washes ashore, or a man with wings just appears out of nowhere all of a sudden making your life better without you realising it, or the power of a curandera is stronger than of God and evil itself. Magical realism a genre of writing, that introduces a realistic narrative and naturalistic technique but includes the elements of dreams, and fantasy making it seem completely normal, different than fiction. There are several elements that makes a writing magical realism but some of the most common are, the setting of a story is set in a normal world with similar historic and cultural facts, magical elements and
The book the Giver by Lois Lowery is told in 3rd person limited. The setting takes place in a futuristic society in several communities and in a utopian/ dystopian world. These communities are ruled by the Elders which are like the community. Somehow everything is controlled in the community, for instance, their jobs, and the weather. The people in the world are really strange because they can not see color, does not know any types of music, nor knows about death.
Many people think that success comes from luck and family support. I agree with this because being successful is something that doesn’t occur often. Also, most people that are successful need their parents and also other parents to help support their programs and keep them running. Being lucky is something that most people don’t just get. Luck can really help a person succeed in life like guessing all the questions right on a really important exam like an ACT or an SAT.
She channels her prosperity into helping others and has become a widely recognized philanthropist, initially via with her talk show then in establishing philanthropic projects that have touched millions around the world. Oprah’s success is undeniable, but what makes her so influential, so remarkable? According to Malcolm Gladwell, author of The Outliers: The Story of Success, there are certain factors that contribute to or thwart the success of an individual; but does Oprah fit the archetype that defines a successful person, or was she simply lucky?
"Luck" is a short story by the brilliant American novelist Mark Twain. In this story, readers learn about the life of Scoresby, a military hero, through the depiction of a clergyman who was once an instructor in a military academy. This was actually a story within another story. As a matter of fact, an unnamed narrator retells the story he once heard from the clergyman. This story is told in the first person point of view. In the first person point of view, the narrator participates in the
As we all know nothing is ever as it seems. In the story the “Lottery” by Shirley Jackson there is a small village in which every summer there is a lottery held. At first when we think of a lottery we think of one lucky winner who wins a grand prize. However in this village the lottery is used to determine one unlucky winner who gets stoned to death. As seen in the story when Tessie Hutchinson, the unlucky winner of the lottery gets stoned to death by her own village.
What is luck? Is it something we can control? Is it a way of the universe favoring some people over others? Or is it simply a perfect combination of being at the right place and at the right time? These are questions I am sure we have all pondered on at some point in our lives. When a friend, colleague, or relative excitedly tells you of the promotions they always seem to be getting at their job. The sports team that seems to have won thanks that one ‘lucky’ shot. The lucky student accepted into a school that not many people get a chance to get into. Or even watching the news about some lucky couple that won the lottery. These are some examples where onlookers would subconsciously accredit the situation to “luck”. My question is, what is luck?
