Children’s Miracle Network, headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, was formed in 1983 by Marie Osmond, John Schneider, Mick Shannon and Joe Lake as what started out as a Telethon. The company then quickly expanded into a major non-profit organization. Throughout the late 20th century, CMN employed multiple fundraising tactics and acquired various corporate and celebrity sponsors (About Us, 2016). Since 1983, CMN has raised over $5 billion to aid over 170 children’s hospitals, support research, help families financially and generate awareness (Financials, 2016).
I would like to focus on one non-profit organization that has been doing very well in the recent years. The name of the organization is St Jude Research Hospital, which deals with the cure and treatment of children suffering from catastrophic diseases. In the five decades, it has been operational, the mortality rate has gradually reduced therefore saving lots of lives. St Jude started its operations in 1962. Danny Thomas was the one who started the organization and was helped by two other close friends (Pui, Pei, Pappo, Howard, Cheng, Sandlund and Gajjar, 2012).

A person’s dreams and traits help to define them as a person. Henrietta’s traits and goals showed the helpful, caring person she was. She loved to help the people around her anyway she could. She was also very strong minded and did not try to let her disease get the best of her. When she got sick she did everything in her power to continue helping the people around her.
The non-profit organization I chose to research is St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. This organization was founded by Danny Thomas in February of 1962. Thomas was a show entertainer, who prayed to St. Jude Thaddeus asking for success so that he would be able to repay others. Now, 54 years later, the hospital has over 3900 employees and is world renown for all of their work with children.

United Way’s business consist of attracting large companies and
Nonprofits represent a huge sector in the United States that includes hundreds of thousands of different organizations. Community-based organizations VISIONS and the Center for Comprehensive Health Practice (CCHP) where I conducted informational interviews represent a significant segment of a community and provide human, social and education services that help to ensure a decent standard of community living. Organizations address the issues that affect the individuals in the society as well as a community. Both organizations provide a series of charitable activities that bring improvement and create sustained social change in the community.

St. Jude Children’s hospital was established in February of 1962 with the “sole purpose of conducting basic and clinical research and treatment into catastrophic childhood diseases” (StJude.org). They have raised survival of childhood cancer from 20% to 80% since their opening through their research (Cancer.org). Even with an average of 7,800 patients a year and a 1.8 million daily operating cost, parents never pay anything for their child’s stay (StJude.org). The survival rate has raised and children are able to stay at no cost due to donations. Most of these donations come from people around the world that see St. Jude’s effective and strong advertisements. I will be analyzing three rhetoric’s ethos, logos, and pathos the hospital used to raise funds and make it effective.
The Angel Network is a national effort to encourage viewers to make charitable contributions and to do volunteer work (Lowe 180). The Angel Network has helped educate, clothe, feed, and provide shelter for the children of Africa. During her travels to Africa, Oprah has provided the children with items such as books and clothing. Thanks to viewer’s generosity, over 16,000 children will receive the uniforms they need to go to school (Oprah.com Live Your Best Life). Also, the network has rewarded single, working mothers struggling to provide for their children. For example, due to the lack of transportation, one mother was awarded a brand new caravan for her and her children. Another accomplishment of the network has been helping the tsunami victims in Asia. After the tsunami caused mass destruction, Oprah’s Angel Network has responded by raising money to send to the people of Asia. Moreover, Oprah’s Angel Network has teamed up with three worldwide relief and development organizations that will be working in the area of Arugam Bay and the town of Pavolli, Sri Lanka and is donating $1 million to help (Oprah.com Live Your Best Life). Whether it is a continent, such as Asia or Africa, or a single mother in
Oprah Winfrey, the first African-American television correspondent in Nashville, Tennessee, was born into poverty and struggle and lived a childhood of abuse and neglect. Everyday, Winfrey had obstacles to conquer, similar to how everyday “from the time the Joshua tree was a tiny sapling, it had been so beaten down by the whipping wind that, rather than trying to grow skyward, it had grown in the direction that the wind pushed it” (21) because of it’s rooting. Winfrey's capacity to remain humble all through each and every crack and crevice of her life show how much of a hard-worker and how determined she is to grow and prosper, which earned her the title of being one of the richest women in the world with a net worth of three billion dollars. This compares to the Joshua tree’s toils of how it stayed alive and prospered for many years which, in the end, symbolizes perseverance and diligence to accomplish peace and balance in one’s
As human beings the vast majority of us wish we could change the world, whether that be helping humans, animals, the environment, it is helping those that cannot help themselves. However, we also realize to help with these causes it takes money and for the most part a great deal of it. But, some people are fortunate enough and can help change the lives of many. That is what Ellen DeGeneres has done with her leadership skills, guidance, celebrity status and wealth. Through her kind heart and passion for the social good she does everything she can to make the world a better place. As technology has developed over the years, society has become extremely reliant and addicted to the media. According to A.C. Nielsen Co., a global information and measurement firm, the average American youth watches twenty eight hours of television per week. Within a sixty-five year timeframe an individual will have spent a total of nine years watching TV (Herr). Both of these sects contribute millions of jobs providing individuals with ample opportunities, a gateway to success. It certainly provided the break for one African American woman to attain a status she could have only dreamt of as a child growing up in an unstable, emotionally debilitating, and unpromising environment. Oprah Winfrey is arguably one of the most influential women
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation was established in 2000 by its namesake, Bill Gates, and his wife Melinda. The couple created the foundation “to help reduce inequities in the United States and around the world.”1 It is headquartered in Seattle, Washing and is co-chaired by Bill, Melinda and William Gates Sr. Since its founding the foundation has accrued an incredible $31.9 billion and has a net worth of almost $50 billion. With such spending power, the foundation has been able to make great progress, particularly in the areas of global health. It has also made a sincere effort to improve many public school systems in the US.
Oprah Winfrey is a very successful woman. She started her life in a small home that had absolutely no electricity or running water. She came from nothing which made her work so much harder and gave her motivation to be the woman she is today. Oprah never really thought about what she wanted to do with her life until she entered a beauty pageant at the age of 17. She was asked what she aspired to be when she grew up and knew that she wanted to be different than all the other girls she was competing against. They wanted to be nurses and teachers, she wanted to be a TV journalist and it just so happens that journalism is the career path she followed as an adult. Oprah fits Maslow’s criteria of self-actualization because she is a selfless person who over the course of life has gained wisdom and insight through all the experiences she has faced both good and bad , allowing her to reach an ideal level of self-wellness.
