1. How important is mobile technology in Orbitz’s business strategy? Why?
Mobile technology plays an important role in Orbitz’s business strategy. According to the case study, since its inception, the company distinguished itself as a leader in mobile technology. Orbitz was the first Internet travel company to offer a mobile Website that allowed users to access itineraries, check flight status, and search for hotels. Orbitz continued to improve its mobile technology offerings by giving customers the ability to view security wait lines, access Wi-Fi services in airports, purchase airline tickets, and book car rentals and hotels all via mobile services. These business process include how and when to update apps and mobile sites, what technology to use in order to run its mobile sites, and how new offerings are rolled out to customers. In addition to business processes, Orbitz needed to consider how its structure, history, and culture affects its mobile strategy.
Some of the technology issues Orbitz needed to address in its mobile strategy are the tools (hardware, software, and technology) it would use to create and offer new products, its information technology structure or platform it will use to deliver its offerings, and what platforms its user would use to access its mobile sites. As new technology becomes available, new challenges are created. However, Orbitz seems handle challenges well as it continues to adapt to new technology well (i.e. Orbitz history of Website upgrades, touch screen capability, and multiple devices app developed).
3. Why are mobile phone users much more likely to book same-day hotel room and airline
It began participating in online sales at the Basic Booking Request level, a level specifically designed for its own needs in 1995, largely to make life easier for travel agents in its home market of Dallas (Bremner, C. & Fiona, J., 2008). This method of distributing their “goods” has benefitted Southwest Airlines immensely. Lower ticket costs, higher sales volume and cutting out the middle man, offering a pseudo bulk break method for the airline shopper. Southwest could improve on this media through progressive marketing campaigns targeting the areas of air travelers they currently do not.
