Organic products and non-organic products have been a subject of interest for me for a reasonable amount of time because I have often questioned whether there really was a difference between the two types of products chemically. To begin, labeling something as organic you have to very precise and it is determined by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The regulations set are extremely specific and it is relatively difficult to meet the standards. The pesticides must be natural, and be part of the approved list established by the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990. The crop must be prohibited of any substance for three years. The consumption of organic food has grown rapidly over the past two decades. Global sales for organic food increased from $23 billion in 2002 to 63 billion in 2011, accounting for 1–2% of total food production worldwide. On the demand side, consumers are willing to pay a premium price for organic food, which typically costs 10% to several times more than non-organic food. The main distinction between organically grown foods and conventionally grown foods is how they are grown. On an organic farm foods are grown using natural bi-products, like manure, and compost. They use spray pesticides from natural sources and traps and mating distractions to keep pests and diseases away. Animals are fed organic feed, and have access to go outdoors. To keep the animals from sickness, preventive measures are used. Meanwhile, on a non-organic farm, their agrochemicals are all synthetic, and the animals are grown with antibiotics, and growth hormones to produce rapid growth. Also, medications are used to prevent diseases in the animals. Because, non-organic foods use synthetic chemicals, it can be produced easier, and cheaper. However, does the use of synthetic chemicals make it a health hazard? If so, then does this make the more expensive organic apple better than the cheaper conventional apple?
