While department stores may benefit from a marketing strategy aimed at a specific market demographic, Wal-Mart’s elements of inclusiveness and vast selection of goods and products make for the perfect storm of success should the CEO adopt a marketing strategy that places an emphasis on the low prices of these products that many customers find essential for their daily routines. In this respect, Wal-Mart possesses a marketing advantage over specialty department stores due to the increased demographic of customer and the ability to somewhat adjust pricing due to surplus (Ferrell, Hirt, Ferrell, 2009). When leaders have the knowledge and capacity to handle the many intricacies of organizational behaviors, it will be easier for them to find solutions to said issues and follow the path to success. As I reflect from the ideas learned from this class, this paper will discuss three chosen organizational concepts, my reflections as how they influenced or changed my thoughts and decision making, both personally and professionally. It will also include experiences and learned theories that undoubtedly impacted my learning process, throughout this time and into the future.
There is a reason that organizational behaviour is such an important field of study, as it helps us to make sense of the world around us, not just what goes on inside organizations. (McShane & Steen, p.3). Organizational behaviour theories help us to re-evaluate ourselves within our distinct roles, which in turn helps us better understand our self-concept and what values are most significant in our lives. After completing the “Winter Survival Exercise”, it is evident as to why organizations value groups for every individual adds their own creativity, rationality and intuition to a problem or opportunity that presents itself. The absolute differences between the individual and group results that were generated, 68 and 36 respectively, showed how significant group effort can be as the group results were much closer to the results of the survival experts.
The course provides students with a conceptual and a pragmatic approach to understand the employees’ behavior in the organization. This course equips students with the knowledge and skills required to diagnose problems of organizational behaviors, and enhance students’ skills to manage the work behavior of employees at the individual, team, and organizational level.
