Organizational Commitment and Communication Paper Many factors within an organization can affect group and organizational communication. Different leadership styles could affect group communication. Sources of power found in the organization could affect organizational communication. There are motivational theories that could be effective within the culture of the organization. The commitment of the workforce to the organization plays a major role in the organization’s communication. It is important to know how each of these factors affects group and organizational communication in order to ensure effective communication within the organization. These rewards are motivators to the employees to respect and follow the orders of their managers. On the other hand, if the employee is disrespectful or does not follow the orders of their managers, the manager has the authority to hand out punishment which is called coercive power. Expert power derives from the experience within each person. More employees are obtaining expert power. “The reason is that employee knowledge becomes the means of production, not some machine that the owner controls. And without this control over production, owners are more dependent on employees to achieve their corporate objectives” (Alexandrou, 2010). Referent power comes from how people perceive each other. When employees like and respect their leaders, the leader has referent power. Motivational theories can be very effective within organizations. The most effective motivational theory for Southwest Airlines would be Theory X and Y. For every negative assumption of human nature from Theory X, Southwest Airlines has strived to make their workplace better for all of their employees, relevant to Theory Y. According to Robbins and Judge (2007) the assumptions held by managers from Theory X and Theory Y are: Theory X 1.
