Orientation for Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.” - William Shakespeare William Shakespeare was a renowned and eminent English poet, actor, and playwright; He has been deemed one of the greatest English writers to date. He was born on the 26th of April in 1564 (in the register of the Holy Trinity Parish Church there is a record of his baptism) and he died of unknown causes on April 23rd, 1616. There are many conspiracy theories surrounding William Shakespeare’s death. One of them is an entry in the diary of John Ward, the vicar of the Holy Trinity Church in Stratford (where he is buried) it tells us that, “Shakespeare, Drayton, and Ben Jonson had a merry meeting and it seems drank too hard, for Shakespeare died of a fever there contracted.” Supposedly, Romeo and Juliet was first staged the late 16th century, however, there are no records for any performances before 1660 when the restoration was made.
