• Although foot and ankle pains come and go, some stay. Spending too much time on your feet or wearing uncomfortable shoes can cause temporary foot pain. If the pain isn't leaving, it may be time to visit an UMA doctor so that the foot pain doesn’t start to affect other parts of the body such as your legs and back.
• Most foot and ankle problems can be improved with special customized inserts called orthotics. Orthotics, also known as orthoses, can be defined as any device inserted into a shoe, made of many different materials that can correct or alleviate an irregular walking pattern. Prescriptions for orthotics are designed for each individual and are customized to match your feet. Orthotics prescribed by your podiatrist are a custom fit rather than the generic insoles sold in drugstores.

Soft-orthotics are most effective for diabetic, arthritic, and deformed feet. Soft orthotics are typically made up of soft, cushioned materials so that they can be worn against the sole of the foot, extending from the heel past the ball of the foot, including the toes. Like rigid orthotics, soft orthotics are personalized and are also made from a mold after a podiatrist takes a plaster cast or other of image of the foot.
• Semi-Rigid Orthotics: Semi-rigid orthotics improve foot balance for walking or when participating in sports. The typical semi-rigid orthotic is made up of layers of soft material, reinforced with more rigid materials. Semi-rigid orthotics are often prescribed for children to help their flatfoot and in-toeing or out-toeing disorders. These specific types of orthotics are used to help athletes ease pain while they train and compete.
