When Oscar was a kid, he was robbed by a gang. The gang put a gun to his head, Oscar was then forced to give up his leather jacket, wallet, and camera to them. Just hours later, all the items were returned to him when the gang realized who they had robbed.

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao is not a happy book. The Author, Junot Diaz, does a great job fooling the reader into believing the story is about the De Leon family, specifically Oscar who is an over weight nerd trying to find the love of his life, but due to a family “fuku” or curse Oscar is having a lot of trouble doing so. Instead, the story actually portrays the dark history of the Dominican Republic under the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. The novel took place in 1974-1987 in Paterson New Jersey, describing Oscar childhood that when he was seven he dates two girls at the same time. However, they broke with him, he was fat, dorky, and unattractive and her sister Lola and his uncle Rodolfo tried to help him to lose weight and be more masculine, but he didn’t listen their advice. Oscar feel that everyone thing that he is a loser and get depress and tried many time to committed a suicide.

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao revolves its narrative around the sexual violence of women during Trujillo’s reign in the Dominican Republic. Despite name of the novel, Oscar is not the only central figure, as the novel also dive into the stories of each member of the de León family. Oscar’s mother, Beli, is a direct victim to the sexual political violence which, as Richardson states, is a “defining narrative of the female characters’ lives” throughout the text (Richardson, 2016, 26). Beli is a character who is defined via her dark skin and feminine body, both of which label her as an outsider within the Dominican Republic. She was victimised throughout her schooling years for her dark skin, however this changed as she reached puberty

While at Rutgers, Oscar thought he had something going with a girl named Jenni Muñuz. They became pretty good friends, getting into deep conversations and telling each other secrets. Oscar only imagined the relationship developing into Jenni becoming his girlfriend. The Fuku had to be getting the best of Oscar at this point, as Jenni found another guy that she made her boyfriend. Again, Oscar was more than crushed. His heart had cracked into a million pieces, glued back together and the shattered again. Oscar was in such bad shape after Jenni found a boyfriend that he decided to commit suicide. Luckily for Oscar, he survived his jump from the bridge as he landed safely on the median. Oscar makes it through college and finds a nice job teaching at his old high school in New Jersey. It is not until a much needed trip to the Dominican Republic where his attitude starts to change.

Junot Diaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, set in the late 1900’s, tells a story of Oscar Wao, an overweight Dominican “ghetto nerd”, his mother and rebellious sister who live together in Paterson, New Jersey. Throughout the novel Diaz incorporates many different stories about each character that show acts of resistance. One of the most prominent stories of resistance in the novel is through Oscar’s mom; Beli, who is prompted by great tragedy, known as the Trujillo curse, to love atomically and thus follows a dangerous path. Beli’s family history plays a large role in her choices that eventually compel her into a different life than what her adopted mother, La Inca, had wanted for her.

The thing didn't flinch, but grabbed her wrist and took a deep bite. She squeezed the trigger several more times and all the bullets hit the thing. It collapsed to the ground. No, the Jersey Devil wasn't real or was it? No, it was just a strange tale that parent's tole their kids to make them stay out of the woods.She gulped in air and kneel down beside the creature. Ybon stared getting creeped out by Oscar so she tried to avoid him but he would not listen. Ybon knew The captain would not be happy if the saw them together he attempted to kiss her but she said “Please don't. He’ll kill us” (321) the captain threatens to kill Oscar, his mom and Lola knew there was trouble they told him to not go that he will get killed but he didn't listen. One night Oscar and Clive, Oscar’s friend are driving by Riverside, they stop at a light. Two of captain’s friend’s named Grod and Grundy get in Clive’s car and beat Oscar. They drove him to the cane fields. As soon as they got the middle of the Cane fields Oscar stood there looking at Grod and Grundy holding a gun point. Oscar gives a speech about how this was horrible and his love for Ybon, they respectfully wait until he's finished and after that they shot him and he dies.
