The “ghost” at the end of the movie is Xiao-kang’s dead father. In my opinion, this scene is trying to indicate that the distance from Xiao-kang to Paris is similar to the distance from Xiao-kang’s mom to the “otherworld”. In this movie, there were two almost identical relationships—the relationship between Xiao-kang’s father and mother and the relationship between Xiao-kang and Xiang-qi. I think the director is trying to use people’s relationships to show that when there’s an unachievable distance, there’s no distance at all. Xiao-kang’s farther was in the “other world” while his mother tired to make connection with him. Paris was as far as the “other world” for Xiao-kang, but there seems to be an unseen connection between Xiao-kang and Xiang-qi. Both the obvious connection between Xiao-kang’s parents and the unseen connection between Xiao-kang and Xiang-qi were unreal but close enough. The distance was far in the real world, but there’s actually no distance in their invisible life. …show more content…
Xiao-kang, at the same time, was also doing something weird. He adjusted all of those clocks and watches he saw, he watched french movie, and he drank wine. In the movie, the water flowing sound Xiao-kang made at night was misunderstanding by his mom as his father was coming back. In fact, I think it’s also the reaction of his father. When Xiao-kang was missing Xiang-qi, Xiang-qi seems to have some reaction as
References to the title in Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird suggest that both Tom Robinson and Boo Radley are “mockingbirds.” The reader is lead to understand that the term suggests an innocent, harmless creature who should not be made to suffer. To Kill a Mockingbird is a sin. This book shows Tom Robinson and Boo Radley as mockingbirds. Boo Radley was the victim of harsh parenting and prejudgement. Tom Robinson was the victim of racism.
Have you ever visited a place and just felt a connection Jing-Mei did when she visited China for the first time in remembrance of her mother. Jing-Mei’s story is told in Amy Tan’s book “The Joy Luck Club” in the section called “A Pair of Tickets.” Tan uses elements in the setting to develop the story of Jing-Mei, she uses the Locale and the Atmosphere to create emotional tension and resolution. The beginning of “A Pair of Tickets” is about Jing-Mei and her father traveling to China to meet her long-lost half sisters who her mother had to abandon because of the war that was going on in China.
At the beginning of the play a group of people see the ghost but when the ghost
Another answer to the question of what the ghost in “No. 1 Branch Line: The Signal-Man” wants is that it is trying to warn the signal-man of impeding danger. The first time that the signal-man saw the specter, the “memorable accident on [the] line happened, and within ten hours the dead and wounded were brought along through the tunnel over the spot where the figure had stood.” (Dickens 8). The second time the signal-man saw the ghost, which was “six or seven months [after],” the ghost “‘leaned against the shaft of the light, with both hands before the face.’” (Dickens 8-9). That same day, a “‘beautiful young lady had died instantaneously in one of the compartments [of the train]’” (Dickens 9). If the ghost was trying to warn the signal-man of these tragic events that occurred, it would have given him a longer notice prior to the events. The ghost also would have been more specific about exactly what was going to happen, rather than just appearing for no apparent reason. The
No closure on his fathers murder, and the thought that his uncle married his mother sickens him, events too close. He started to see the ghost when he thought of it because of his lack of closure. (Quote of the funeral food being used for the wedding)
The reemergence of the buried dead--the intervention of the Ghost in this scene--has always been a source of great controversy and general dismay. Eleanor Prosser speaks for many when she says, "The final appearance of the Ghost presents an insoluble problem. Every theory about its purpose is faced with some contradiction." To Prosser, the Ghost's appearance "has served only one purpose: not to lead Gertrude to Heaven but to leave her to Hell.
At around ten o’clock at night, a young girl was laying in bed when all of a sudden someone started rubbing her cheek. She looked around and no one was there. Was this her imagination, or was someone there? Ghosts always make their presence known, just like the Ghost in the tragedy Hamlet written by William Shakespeare. Throughout the character of the Ghost of Hamlet’s father, Shakespeare portrays many Elizabethan beliefs on ghosts. Shakespeare creates the question: is the ghost good or bad? Many people have their own opinion on this question, but in this writer’s opinion, the Ghost of Hamlet’s father is a good ghost because throughout the tragedy the Ghost of Hamlet’s father never physically hurts anyone, instead he persuades Hamlet
During the second appearance of the ghost, Hamlet is the only one who can see it. Many argue this is a sign the ghost is false, and Hamlet is crazy because he can see it. While having a conversation with his mother, Queen Gertrude, Hamlet sees the ghost and converses with
The main reason Wang Lung has a complex relationship with his son is because he has a difficult time thinking of him as anything other than a quiet boy. Wang Lung hardly knows who his son is, which makes it difficult for him to understand his youngest son’s motives and personality. There is a moment in the novel where Wang Lung feels at peace, and this leads him to reflect on his family, including the youngest boy. Buck writes,“There was none to trouble him, for his youngest son was a silent lad who kept out of his father's way and Wang Lung scarcely knew what he was, so silent a lad was he” (241). Wang Lung does not know much about his son, other than the fact that he is quiet and keeps to himself.
Late one night, Jing-Mei talks with her father about her mother's past. Canning Woo begins to tell her mother's story in English and then asks him to tell her in Chinese. The reason for this is, she is starting to comprehend what it means to be Chinese accordingly, she desired, to hear the dialect in the local tongue. She comprehends Mandarin Chinese yet cannot expatiate it well. Jing-Mei father told her mother’s ‘Suyuan story, of how she was a military officer and how she had to leave her twin daughter behind with her remaining money and valuables to their clothes. Canning Woo also told Jing-Mei that her name is Chwun Yu and Chwun Hwa; and their name means “Spring Rain' and 'Spring Flower.” (Tan 156) which reflects their close relationship
Hamlet and the Ghost relationship are connected because the Ghost is the only on tell Hamlet the truth. “But 2 months dead-nay, not so much not two” (Shakespeare P. 26). His father hasn’t been dead for no more than two mounts and King Claudius want the whole kingdom to stop mourning over the death of the former king (King Hamlet) and start celebrate him (King Claudius). “ so, Uncle, there you are, now it’s time for me to keep the vow that i made to my father” (shakespeare P.66). Hamlet’s father's (Ghost) had just got done tell Hamlet that Claudius just killed him and that his mother (Gertrude) was having an affair the whole time Hamlet. “O all you host of heaven! O earth! What else? Shall I cripple in hell” (Shakespeare P.66). This is ready a turning point in the reading because of the fact
To start with, the ghost heavily influences the development of a few characters in the play which includes Hamlet and his friends. In the opening act, Hamlet’s friends encounter the ghost of the former king while standing guard on the wall of the castle. They are the first and only characters besides Hamlet that the ghost influences. They are also the only ones besides Hamlet that can see the ghost. This furthers the story by sending Hamlet’s friends on a mission to tell him of his father’s return. From the beginning of the play Hamlet is already depressed and down after being called home from school to return to Denmark to witness the funeral of his father. Following the funeral Hamlet meets up with his friends where they tell him of his father’s ghost. Immediately, this sparks Hamlet’s interest and he wishes to hear more of his father. ‘The king my father!/For God’s love, let me hear.” (1.2.192-95 Hamlet) Here Shakespeare shows Hamlet’s interest in the matter
their trees." As in most war, the first casualty was the truth. When Europe slid from a nervous peace into raging war, almost everyone anticipated a brisk, spectacular and triumphant campaign. In the summer of July 1914, war was a great and glorious suggestion. Not yet real, a 'good ole biff' was a glamorous image that appealed to soldiers and civilians alike. Indeed, attitudes towards war were most enthusiastic and joyous amongst almost everybody in both Britain and Germany.
Throughout Shakespeare's Hamlet, intersperse various symbols to describe Hamlet’s mental state. As he does so, the symbols also show exhibit Hamlet’s great debate between acting and contemplating. Within the play, the ghost contributes to Hamlet’s actions to a great degree. Hamlet only seeks revenge because the ghost has asked him to do so and kill Claudius. The ghost symbolizes his haunting memories and the debate between reality and imagination. When the ghost first appeared before him, he has dedicated
Greece, a country that contributed to all aspects of life; math, science, astronomy, literature and much more other things were only some of their great contributions to modern day’s education. They were very wise people that believed in many different things. The greatest of their beliefs were the Greek mythological gods. “ The Greeks believed that all the gods were descendants of Gaia and Uranos”. They believed that all the gods could do human like actions.
