The medical profession is often times lumped into the thought that “a doctor is a doctor”. Many people fail to explore more into the specialized fields of medicine. There are 25 plus specialized fields and within those fields there are many subspecialties (“Specialties and Subspecialties”). All of these positions make up what what is far too often generalized as the “medical field”. This paper is going to focus in on one specialty in particular; otolaryngology, often referred to as “ear, nose, and throat” or ENT for short. Throughout this paper it’ll explore what being an ENT is and what the job entails, what it takes to become an ENT, and the different subspecialties that fall into the otolaryngology category. Being the oldest medical specialty in the United States, otolaryngology is an important part of today’s medical system. …show more content…
The American Academy of Otolaryngology, roughly 35 million people develop chronic sinusitis (inflammation of the nasal sinusitis) each year (“What Is An Otolaryngologist?”, 2011). Treating sinusitis is a common occurrence in an ENT’s career, becoming a primary skill of an ENT. Other specific problems involving the nasal cavities that ENT’s treat are: allergies, smell disorders, polyps (growths on the lining of your nasal passages or sinuses), deviated septum, and even change the appearance of the nose itself (“Department of Otolaryngology” 2013).
Another expertise that ENT’s possess is the treatment of diseases of the throat. Given that communication and food consumption are both dependent on this area it’s essential that it’s done properly. The portion is composed of the throat, larynx (voice box), and esophagus. It includes voice and swallowing disorders as well. Some common medical issues ENT’s treat regarding the throat are: dysphagia, laryngitis, sleep apnea, snoring, tonsillitis, and vocal disorders (“Department of Otolaryngology”
CSD 363 is a practicum course that gives students the opportunity to provide schools with free speech and hearing screenings. This class is mutually beneficial, seeing that students have an undergraduate opportunity to start practicing skills typically developed in graduate school, and that families receive valuable services for free. The screenings given are comprised of two parts: the Fluharty Speech and Language test, and an audiology pure tone screening including a look in the ears with an otoscope. Under the supervision of a licensed supervisor, students will be giving these screenings and making recommendations about further evaluations if necessary.

The authors are experts in the field of Ear Nose and Throat specialty and provided an accepted general overview of the care and management of AOM as appropriate in 2007.
The medical field is a career path that brings about many options and opportunities of great value. The noble idea of being a doctor tends to cloud the diligent studying and precise training that is actually required for this career. I have wanted to become a doctor since a very young age, and now that the opportunity is here for the taking, I have fully researched what it takes to succeed in this profession and various specialties of the practice. The road to a medical degree is one filled with thousands of notes, years of schooling, and many stressful nights, but the reward is one incomparable to any other. Saving people’s lives on a day-to-day basis has been one of my dreams for as long as I can remember, so the rigorous curriculum
Healthcare officials can’t have a discussion on improving the disparities with African Americans and cochlear implants without discussing the driving force that would bring about change and that is the physician. The physician knows first-hand which patients appear to be suffering as it relates to utilizing something that will undoubtedly improve their life. It compels most physician to establish leadership roles depending on their passion to making a difference for their patient’s well-being. Often times physicians find themselves being involved with institutional policy reforms and undergoing vast changes within their healthcare facility. As such, the changes are concurred with administrative officials who routinely revise programs and create comprehensive long-term goals.
Hyperacusis is a rare condition so not too many doctors know much about it. Unfortunately, even some ENT doctors I've been to don't know what hyperacusis is. The best research summary I've found on hyperacusis is listed below. I haven't had the chance to print it out and bring it to doctor's appointments yet.
On examination today there was a relatively dry nasal pack in the left nostril, which I
Majority of the patients showed dull and retracted tympanic membrane on otoscopic examination. Nasal endoscopy done in all 60 patients showed features of adenoid hypertrophy Grade II and III with significant obstruction of choanae in 43 cases. 11 Cases showed grade I adenoid hypertrophy. On analysing the relationship of adenoid hypertrophy and the age of the patient it was observed that children in the age group of 5 – 8 years showed significant obstruction of choanae than in the age group of 9 – 12 years. This finding could be secondary to physiological adenoid hypertrophy which is found more commonly in 5 -8 years age group. In the present study Medical management was performed in Group A in the form of: Chewing gum regularly. Autoinflation in the form of modified polisterization at home. Topical steroid – Mometesone fumarate monohydrate 100µg twice daily for 8 weeks. Wait and watch. Were given for the following reasons: Chewing gum have shown significant reduction in prevalence of otitis media with effusion by increasing palatal muscle action which activates peritubal muscles and tubal opening. Autoinflation because of its low cost / absence of adverse effect , it is reasonable to consider
As a teenager, I read Doctors by Erich Segal and instantly, my love for medical sciences was born. Though, I was certain that I wanted to pursue a career in health sciences, dentistry was not always what I had in mind for a career. But it was my father’s dream and I decided to live it. In 2009, at the beginning of my first term in

Surgery is reserved for those cases when the medical treatment has failed. This treatment is usually performed by an otolaryngologist. The goal of surgery is repairing the anatomical deformities like fixing defects in the bone separating the nasal passages, removing nasal polyps, opening closed nostrils, among others. According to the patient's needs, the procedure can be performed under local or general anesthesia, and as an outpatient procedure. Surgery is especially useful in patients with chronic sinusitis or recurrent episodes of acute sinusitis.
The surgical indication is given on the basis of medical history and in particular on the basis of frequency of infectious episodes for the following years. Or on the basis of particularly important infections such as tonsillar abscess. The surgery is performed under general
Sinusitis, also called a sinus infection, is the inflammation of the membranes lining the sinus cavities around the nose. The condition can be caused by anything that disrupts the flow of air into the sinuses and the mucus that drains from the cavities. Sinus openings can get blocked when its tissue lining and the neighboring nasal passages become swollen. This could be triggered by a variety of factors including allergies, colds, cigarette smoke, nasal sprays, cocaine, and any other substance that irritates the tissue. Though less common, blockages can also be the result of growths or tumors. When the mucus is unable to drain, it creates an ideal environment for bacterial growth, which can lead to an infection.
This article lists a number of ways of treating sinusitis naturally. Sinusitis is a chronic illness that causes a person’s sinuses, cavities in the facial bones, to get irritated and swell, narrowing and possibly blocking their drainage channel. Most sinuses drain more than a quart of mucus every day, but sinusitis does not allow this to happen, resulting in symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, postnasal drip, and halitosis. The natural relief treatments included in the article are inhaling steam, massaging certain areas of the body, rinsing the nostril with salt water, and eating spicy foods. Several long-term solutions are included as well, such as sleeping and eating well, treating allergies naturally, acupuncture, and breathing fresh air. While this article revolved around a topic largely related to the field of otolaryngology, there were several red flags regarding the credibility of the source. The article was
A 40-year-old woman comes to the clinic with a history of worsening nasal congestion and recurrent sinus infections. She had been healthy until about 1 year ago when she first noticed persistent rhinorrhea, sneezing, and stuffiness. She noted that when she went on a 2-week vacation to Mexico, her rhinorrhea disappeared, only to return when she came home again. She has lived in the same house for the past 5 years along with her husband and one child. They have had a dog for 4 years and a cat for 1 year. On physical examination, she has boggy, swollen nasal turbinates and a cobblestone appearance of her posterior pharynx.
You have mentioned about social history. There are couple of questions that I have posted in my discussion that I think are important to cover under social history, asking patient about smoking history as well as history of drinking alcohol. Questions such as, do you smoke? Are you normally around people who smoke? Smoking and second-hand smoke increases the risk of otitis media by two to three times more (Dains, Baumann, & Scheibel, 2016). Cigarette smoking can cause the obstruction of the Eustachian tube and therefore decrease the ciliary protective action in the tube. Excessive amount of alcohol intake can increase the irritation to the throat, which may also cause soreness.
