The factors that affect the economic diversity of Halifax include, natural resources, industries, exports, and jobs and employments. Natural resource such as fish are very abundant in the Grand Banks where the Continental Shelf provides ideal conditions and food for marine species. Atlantic salmon, herring and cod are the most abundant. Another resource is fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas which are used to generate electricity (Andrew, 2004, p.18). Industries depend on these resources. For example, non-fuel-minerals support mining industries and abundance of fish support fishing industries (Halifax, 2015).
The influence of French culture within Canada has a rich history that can only be attributed to one man, Samuel de Champlain who not only shaped the history of France but of Canada as well. Champlain was a French explorer (cartographer, geographer, etc.) who journeyed across the Atlantic Ocean from 1603 until his death in 1635 (Ritchie, 2016; “Samuel de Champlain”, 2004; Wikipedia, 2016). He is often labeled as the Father of New France (or Quebec) as he sailed to Canada and was the first man to establish a French colony there. The impact of his 1609 expedition to New France has helped to shape the historical, scientific and cultural aspects of our society.

Although I had been to Canada several times throughout my life I’ve rarely had the opportunity to travel outside of Ontario, only having gone to Montreal once or twice. Québec City seemed both intriguing as well as slightly concerning due to the predominant language of Québec being French, a language which I speak very little of. For me, as I read the Itinerary of the trip the one visit that stood out was the Citadel. The Citadel intrigued me due to the fact that Québec City was one of only two cities in North America that is still surrounded by fortifications, which meet at the strategically located military base. Also the idea that this fortress had at one point in time allowed Canada to control the St. Lawrence River, a river which I

The St. Lawrence boulevard is full of history. Before becoming the large and impressive street it is nowadays, this boulevard was the only path upon which travelers could get in and out of Montreal. In fact, this unique street served as a pathway to link the North and the South shore of the island, and consequently, it was a vital contributor to the development of Montreal . Any cargo or people coming from Europe would enter the port and from there, take the St. Lawrence road in order to reach their new settlement. In 1717, the French colony built defensive walls around what we now call the Vieux-Montréal . These walls only had one

Samuel de Champlain is one of the most notable French immigrants in the French Canadian culture. Those who are a part of the French Canadian culture are citizens of Canada who are direct descendants of the first few French immigrants (“French Canadian”). Champlain created maps of Canada, creating a “major trade [route] along the inland rivers” as well as being “the first European to see the Great Lakes” (“North America’s”). As an explorer, Champlain set up the basic land foundation of present day Canada. He explored, mapped, and tracked things and places that were completely new and foreign to not just the French, but the entire European continent.
