Toys are designed to allow children to practice for roles they’ll take as adults. That is the reason why there are toy pots and pans, toy doctor kits, and housekeeping toys,baby dolls and many more. Children are able to learn about the world and their place in it through play, it can help them to get used to what they are going to be dealing with the rest of their lives. However, there is another key point in the despair for modern young children and that is the ideal of beauty. Toys affect the way a child looks at their body image, gender role, and heterosexual relationships.
Studies show how kids are starting to develop concerns about body image at much younger ages than one may think. Toys and games we play with can influence us in a huge way. For example, a lot of girls look up to Barbie and want to look just like her. There have even been girls who have had many plastic surgeries in order to achieve that “perfect Barbie body.” The effects Barbie and body image run deeper than you might have ever imagined.
Barbie comes off as a strong and independent women who has everything a girl needs. It is one thing to teach young girls to admire and desire opulence and the best things in life, but the messages that products such as the Barbie dolls send are equally insidious.
