Our bodies run on fuel. When our tanks become empty, we have to make a pit stop to replenish. But what happens if we don 't provide ourselves with a good source of energy? A poor choice of fuel could degrade our engines and leave us stranded on the highway to good health. In order to maintain peak performance, we need to pay more attention to what 's happening in the food industry and educate ourselves on how to make healthy food choices. Imports are a large aspect of the United States food industry. The USDA says 17 percent of food consumed in America in 2012 was imported, and this number is steadily increasing. But according to the 2012 International Food Information Council Food and Health Survey, about half of Americans feel imported …show more content…
This proves some of the risks associated with imported food, but if we understand the standards of production in the countries from which we receive products, we can try to prevent these problems (TribLive Lifestyles). Along with the origin of our food, the type of food we eat plays a large impact on our health. For example, an excess of certain foods can lead to various problems such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Diabetes is a chronic illness that affects the production of insulin in the pancreas and the way our bodies process sugar. There are two types of diabetes, but type 2 diabetes is most commonly associated with diet because it results from being overweight. Obesity can cause our bodies to become insulin resistant, which means even though our body continues to produce insulin, our cells don’t use it like they should. Focusing on a healthy diet low in fat and high in fiber as well as living an active lifestyle can reduce our risk of developing this disease (WebMD- Type 2 Diabetes: The Basics). But diabetes isn 't the only possible result of a poor diet; heart disease can also result from poor food habits such as consuming excess sodium and fat. A diet high in saturated and trans fat also has a strong correlation with the risk of coronary artery disease, heart attack,
Explain to individuals about the consequences of a poor diet choice. For example, obesity can lead to heart disease, varicose veins, diabetes and arthritis. High cholesterol and diets high in salt can lead to heart attacks and strokes.
According to Donald D. Hensrud of the Mayo Clinic on Healthy Weight, “Eating well – choosing a plant-based diet, which emphasizes vegetables, fruits and whole grains – also will reduce your risks of some of our nation’s biggest killers and related conditions. Many cancers, heart disease and high blood pressure, among other conditions, are linked to diet, most notably to diets high in fat and saturated fat. Even without weight loss, adopting a healthier eating style can be beneficial. (Hensrud 49)”
A person that is on a low-fat diet: eats less food; satisfies hunger; fills the stomach; and diminishes the desire to eat. In a low-fat diet, there is also less risk of a heart attack and/or stroke. The low-fat diet can also prevent and/or reduce the risk of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and cancer. In other words, prevents many illnesses. Some of the low-fat diet foods include vegetables and fruits that are very important to the human body. The low-fat diet helps a person maintain a healthy weight and reduce the risk of illnesses.
In 2004 according to a report America’s imported as much as Japan, Germany, China and India combined.
Consuming fast food is also associated with poor health outcomes, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity.5

There are many things wrong with our food system but one of the principal problems is us and our decisions. Wendell Berry who is a farmer and environmental activist wrote in the article The Pleasures of Eating about his theory of eating responsibly which included his opinion on food and the influence others have on what type of food we consume. In his article he addresses the problem with the industries’ influence on the quality of what we eat and the role the consumer has in this process. He states that we cannot be free if our decisions are influenced by others and all we do is agree to what they tell us we should.
It is very easy to be amazed at the variety of products that can be found in today's supermarkets, all over the world. The United States in particular is a society of consumers, and many in this country would expect no less than full shelves of everything from produce, to meats, to snacks, etc. However, what most consumers today fail to realize is that the variety seen in most supermarkets in this country is really not too varied at all. In fact, the point that Michael Pollan aims to make in the first chapter of his book is just that: everything comes from corn. The paragraphs below will detail this author's beliefs in relation to today's consumer market, and focus on the ways in which most of us consume the products we are offered (often without questioning anything). Pollan's point will be stressed in this paper as well; namely, that today's society is suffering from poor nutrition and a lack of variety, due to the fact that 'everything boils down to corn,' as Pollan states, as well as the relative lack of education about the places from which one's food comes.
Not only are we wasting time, but we are remaining silent and still, while watching the quality of life crumbling. The food and eating habits, are the direct victims; the ingredients, quality and the provenance not printed or hidden on labels is the fraud that we are paying for. Consequently, for the agenda that creates the deterioration of the products affect us at least twice: First for the overall quality and the price increase that’s justified through the packaging that is in most cases is cause of pollution and works at his best for the disguising what we should be aware of. As a secondary cause I can bring forward the possibility of needing medical attention. Adding a third one is the crime that rates as the worst deprivation of humanity’s property, found in drinking
Saturated fats were said to be linked to health risks that are detrimental to society as a whole. These health risks include the development of heart disease and type II diabetes
The reduction of the amount of saturated fats from one’s diet improves health greatly for cardiovascular health. According to nursingdegree.com, ”Eating nuts and whole grains, while eliminating dairy products and meat, will improve… cardiovascular health.” When eliminating food that comes from animals doing so eliminates all dietary cholesterol from one’s diet. Vegan diets go to extreme lengths to prevent heart attack and stroke. Eating a healthy diet is instrumental in the reduction of the risk factors for several major diseases. Obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol are a few of the risk factors that serve as precursors to major diseases, and can be controlled with healthy eating.
Healthy eating can decrease the risk of many problems that are on the rise such as obesity, high blood pressure, and Type 2 diabetes.
The constant consumption of junk food can cause type 2 diabetes. When people eat a lot of junk food they are consuming in excess sugar and fats because this meal is full of it and high in calories, if people eat it constantly they tend to gain a lot of weight because of the amount fat they are putting into their body, this leads to obesity, worst of all nowadays a lot of parents allow their children to consume this kind of food and 15% of children suffer from childhood obesity at a very young age which is a huge factor on getting type 2 diabetes.
Poor diet can have a big impact on a person health. People may not be able to afford to purchase food that is good for them, like fresh fruit and fresh vegetables. They may have to buy cheaper alternatives which will not have the same nutritional value as fresh produce and they end up with a higher risk of suffering health issues and dying young.
