Our topic was on the social and social psychological dynamics of sexuality and gender in the patriarchal system, so we related this to Chapter 4 in Dude You’re a Fag: Compulsive heterosexuality, Masculinity and Dominance. We use many examples from the book which relate to many relief examples occurring all over in today’s society, as well as including a discussion of how certain feminist are trying to pin point and make changes too this issue. Masculinity is constructed in ways that marginalize femininity, emphasizing how men often use women as "props" to signify a masculine identity and reproduce masculine forms of superiority.
Subordination of women to men is prevalent in large parts of the world. They challenge the traditional race, class, sexuality, and power arrangements. So, a few approaches to understanding patriarchy are through the Liberal feminism, Marxist feminism, socialist feminism, and radical feminism, psychoanalytical feminist and postmodern feminist views.
Chapter four looked at gender practices and instead of taking them at face value as testosterone fueled verbal jockeying, pays attention to the meanings of masculinity embedded in them (pg.85). There were a few examples in chapter four that made great examples to help understand what is meant by men using females as “props”, including guys bragging about their sexual practices “haven’t you heard of the three B’s, Blow Job, Back massage, and breakfast in bed” “ That’s why you gotta go for the young ones fool! Like twelve years old” (pg. 85). Boys talking about heterosexuality are and are not talking about sex, their talk about heterosexuality reveals less about sexual orientation and desire than it does about the centrality of the ability to exercise mastery and dominance literally or figuratively over girl’s bodies. Demonstrating dominance in a variety of ways is a central part of contemporary masculinities.
