In 1992 the historic UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED, popularly known as the Earth Summit) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil witnessed unprecedented political will and commitment among governments to make a paradigm shift to sustainable development. Acknowledging the twin crises of poverty and the environment.

Principle 2: States have the sovereign right to exploit their own resources pursuant to their own environmental and developmental policies and jurisdiction but not cause damage to the environment.
Principle 3: The right to development must be fulfilled so as to equitably meet developmental and environmental needs of present and future generations.
Principle 4: To achieve sustainable development, environmental protection shall constitute an integral part of the development process.
Principle 5: All States and all people shall cooperate in the essential task of eradicating poverty as an indispensable requirement for sustainable development.
Principle 6: The least developed and those most environmentally vulnerable, shall be given special priority.
Principle 7: States shall cooperate in a spirit of global partnership to conserve, protect and restore the health and integrity of the Earth’s ecosystem.
Principle 8: States should reduce and eliminate unsustainable patterns of production and consumption and promote appropriate demographic policies.
Principle 9: States should cooperate to strengthen endogenous capacity-building for sustainable development by improving scientific understanding through exchanges of scientific and technological knowledge.
Principle 10: States shall facilitate and encourage public awareness and participation by making information widely available. Effective access to judicial and administrative proceedings,

Precautionary principle is the three spheres of sustainability economy, environment and society based on how they equalize one another. The six precautionary concepts are: Preventive Anticipation the will to take early action without waiting for proof. Safeguard the environmental recognition. Proportionality of response cost the degree of restriction. Duty of Care, Promoting of the cause of rights inherent natural. And Payment for past ecological debt.
With Al Gore as his Vice President, President Clinton introduced to the United Nations the sustainable development initiative, which is defined as the development of a concept that refers to development where emphasis is shifted from short term economic gains to a more long term approach where there is balance between economic, social, and environmental considerations. Sustainable development requires an integrated approach to decision-making linking the economy, the environment, and society rather than a piecemeal approach. The development of this type is a complex process of interaction between public authorities, civil society, and the private sector.
Three general principles will guide the move towards sustainability. Firms and industries must become more efficient in using natural resources; they should model their entire production process on biological processes; and they should emphasize the production of services rather than products. Versions of the first principle, sometimes called eco- efficiency, have long been a part of the environmental movement. "Doing more with less" has
emphasizes on the common value that is shared by all human beings. “Environmental rights are fundamental human rights.” Everyone deserves the basic rights to live and have the responsibility to protect our rights. Similarly, humans are just like other animals and we cannot live by ourselves. We need a good environment for us to sustain our lives. Therefore, it is our responsibility to care about any environmental issues on the earth.
Principle 3 states that Wave 3 should ensure that resources are managed and meet the needs of all
It is the obligation of all to maintain all creation of earth’s life forms. If these are damaged, earth’s environment will be depleted. This is included in FTPbroadcasts, (2013a), all human beings are intertwined to god and the earth; it is the responsibility of all individuals to respect and care for such earth. The ACU, (2012) also illustrates the importance of safeguarding all life forms on the planet, even plants, and animals, by protecting the earth. ACU, (2012) expresses how without the protection of a healthy environment, humanity cannot flourish and there will be nothing left for the future
In general, this report discusses the successes and failures overall, analyzes sustainable development, institutional gaps, and also a call to action. Both Lomborg and The Brundtland Report agree that “...infant mortality is falling; human life expectancy is increasing; the proportion of the world’s adults who can read and write is climbing; the proportion of children starting school is rising; and global food production increases faster than the population grows.” (Brundtland 93) In conjunction with all the positive actions being taken; there are also environmental trends that threaten to radically alter the planet, that threaten the lives of many species upon it, including the human species. There has also been a growing realization in national government and multilateral institutions that it is impossible to separate economic development issues from environmental issues. Nevertheless, “humanity has the capability to make development sustainable to ensure that it meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” (Brundtland 95) Furthermore, the goal for sustainable development and the integrated nature of the global environment/development challenges pose problems for institutions. “There is a growing need for effective international cooperation to manage ecological and economic interdependence.” (Brundtland 97) Last but not least, “To achieve the needed changes, we believe that an active follow-up of this report is imperative. It is with this in mind that we call for the UN General Assembly, upon due consideration, to transform this report into a UN Programme on Sustainable Development.” (Brundtland 99) There are many environmental issues occurring to our beautiful planet right now and will
Important advantages of Resources on the Earth are limited. That the way we behave now does not make life difficult or impossible for future generations. To achieve sustainable development,we need to carefully consider the need for economic development, where standards of living improve
(Harris, 2000: 5) This is the kind of development that will advance us and help us live healthy, better, rich lives without posing a threat on the environment or posterity to depend on the environment for life. Furthermore, protecting the environment means that the species residing in the different habitats of the environment are automatically set out of danger and protected as well.
“...the core values that underpin sustainable development - interdependence, empathy, equity, personal responsibility and intergenerational justice - are the only foundation upon which any viable vision of a better world can possibly be constructed.” Jonathon Porritt
For quite some time, life on earth has been nothing but peaches and cream for several people and because of people who live a non-sustainable life, it has left others with an indistinct outlook on earth’s future. Sustainability to me is doing things that will help prevent harmful things from happening to the environment now and in the future. With the support of the sustainability and more quality ways of living, the Earth Charter is gradually introduced. Through key research I will explain what the Earth Charter is and why it was founded, describe one of its four parts along with the goals and overarching philosophy, and share the impact it has on my life now and in the future.
Dire to environmental protection is the cooperation of all state actors, not just the cooperation of the United States. “He went on to threaten to take action against
Since the creation of the UN’s World Commission on Environment and Development in 1987, the term “sustainability” has become a common term used when discussing the future of the world (Kerr &Hart-Steffes2012). Sustainability, in a broad sense, means living harmoniously with the environment, society, and economy without compromising quality of life for peoples of future generations. There are three main components to sustainability: social, environmental, and economic. The social dimension refers to housing, education, health care, and other aspects that contribute to one’s quality of life, while the economic dimension speaks to a viable local economy with job creation and incoming revenue not dependent on high consumption or population
