Among the many things that Americans enjoy, basketball has always been an integral part of our culture. I picked up the game when I was in the first grade and still find myself playing it whenever I get the chance. Nowadays, there seems to be a lack of parks and such for people to go to and have some fun with others. Streetball has made its own culture and kids grow up idolizing older players that are out on the courts making the game look so enjoyable. With that being said, it is in my firm belief that outdoor basketball courts are an essential part of communities and need to be given more attention because they are great places for kids to go and play and stay out of trouble while being in touch with their surroundings. Most players began playing basketball as compared to other sports because it was easily accessible and relatively cheap with basically everything provided when going to a local court. I was not surprised to find that one of my favorite basketball players of all time was a streetballer. He was a troublemaker, and was previously sentenced to serve fifteen years in prison but managed to turn himself around with the game of basketball. Allen Iverson spent his days at the park working on his lethal crossover that would one day even make Michael Jordan look silly. Those days spent at the court led him to a full scholarship to attend Georgetown, in which he later entered the NBA Draft after his sophomore year, and ended up being selected first overall by the Philadelphia 76ers. Not only did Allen Iverson change the NBA because of streetball. There is also Stephon Marbury, Jason “White Chocolate” Williams, and Jamal Crawford (Walter). They all are scrappy and flashy players which helped bring some toughness and excitement back to the NBA. If it were not for the parks out there allowing these players to pick up the game, they may have went a different way in life and been stuck in their slums. A twenty dollar basketball and a place for them to go and use it got them to the point where they are making a career out of it.
