The main conflict in my book "Between shades of gray ", would be, when Lina, her little brother Jonas, and their mother have to survive to find whether their father and husband are alive or dead. The protagonist in my book would be Lina and her family and the event that would be happing to them would be that they have to go through tough things to get the answer if her father is alive or dead, but in the middle of the story, Lina finds out that her father has been shot and she is now devastated . The antagonist in my book would be, the NVKD soldiers because, they are the ones who are punishing poor people because of their own problems in this book.
Conflict is a key aspect in all pieces of literature. Without it, works would be very boring, predictable and would not be able to draw the reader in. There is usually one main conflict the protagonist faces, whether it is against an evil villain or the evil inside their own self. In the book The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, the courageous protagonist, Lily, struggles with an internal conflict with the guilt of possibly being the cause of her mother's death and the absence of knowledge about her mother. Following a clue left by her mother, Lily runs away from home and meets the "calendar sisters" in Tiburon, SC. There, she is finally able to discover who her mother actually was and learn the truth behind her mother's death: that Lily had accidentally shot her. Upon uncovering the whole truth, Lily is finally able to begin to forgive herself and shrug off the heavy guilt that had burdened her for years. Through Lily's struggle to figure out who her mother was and accept what happened to her, Sue Monk Kidd wishes to communicate that even if something

In his essay, “Freedom and Resentment”, Strawson aims to prove human freedom by evaluating two opposing viewpoints, the optimist and the pessimist toward determinism, and discrediting various ideas within each argument in order to arrive at his own conclusion. It is necessary to understand that the basis of Strawson’s argument focuses on human psychology. He believes that innate tendencies engrained in our dispositions develop our subjective reactive attitudes and we are too attached to interpersonal relationships to consider changing all attitudes to objective ones. While I find Strawson’s points to be relevant and compelling, there are flaws in his argument that cannot be ignored.
Were all the American grievances really justified, or were the British actually being more reasonable than most Americans have traditionally believed?
This theme shows in a multitude of ways that the author utilizes throughout the story, but perhaps most significant is the central conflict
On March 6, 1857, two days after the inauguration of Buchanan, the Supreme Court rendered a decision in the case of Dred Scott v. Sandford. Dred Scott, born a slave in Virginia in about 1800, was taken to St. Louis in 1830 and sold, relocated to Illinois, then to the Wisconsin Territory, and finally back to St. Louis in 1842. While in the Wisconsin Territory, Scott eventually married and had two daughters. After the death of his owner, in 1843, Scott aggressively tried to buy his freedom. In 1846, Harriet Scott influenced her husband to file suit in the Missouri courts, claiming residence in Illinois and the Wisconsin Territory made him a free African American. A jury decided in his favor, but state Supreme Court ruled against him. When the case rose on appeal to the Supreme Court, the nation apprehensively awaited the decision on whether freedom once granted could be lost by

First, in the case of Dred Scott v. Sandford, Dr. John Emerson, held Dred Scott as a slave in the state of Missouri. During the years of 1834-1838, Emerson traveled to territories that are now known as Illinois and Minnesota, bring Scott with him. However, in these locations slavery was prohibited. After returning to Missouri, Scott sued unsuccessfully in the Missouri courts for his freedom, claiming that his residence in free territory made him a free man. Ultimately the Supreme court ruled that Dred Scott was a salve. Justice Taney argued, no one but a citizen of the United States could be a citizen of a state, and that only Congress could confer national citizenship. Taney reached the conclusion that no person descended from an American
Jonathan Harr wrote a compelling novel, called A Civil Action, on the actual events of a thrilling court case involving two major corporations and the families who were affected greatly. In Woburn, Massachusetts there were twenty-eight children who contracted acute lymphocytic leukemia between the years of 1964 and 1986. The explanation for the contraction of the disease and even the death of some of the children was discovered in the water; two municipal wells near the town were found to be contaminated with toxic chemicals. Eight families filed suit against W.R. Grace & Co. and Beatrice Foods Inc., accusing them for the contamination of the wells and the death of their children. The families only wanted an apology and the truth but when
The subject matter of the “Republic” is the nature of justice and its relation to human existence. Book I of the “republic” contains a critical examination of the nature and virtue of justice. Socrates engages in a dialectic with Thrasymachus, Polemarchus, and Cephalus, a method which leads to the asking and answering of questions which directs to a logical refutation and thus leading to a convincing argument of the true nature of justice. And that is the main function of Book I, to clear the ground of mistaken or inadequate accounts of justice in order to make room for the new theory. Socrates attempts to show that certain beliefs and attitudes of justice and its nature are inadequate or inconsistent, and present a way in which those
How big of an impact can an injustice have on a person's life? Conflicts play a crucial role in novels. Without conflict, novels would be uninteresting and very dull. Conflicts are seen in many different forms, as internal conflicts, when a character must deal with private problems, and external conflicts, when a character must deal with problems originating from an external source, like another person or society in general. Some common conflicts seen in other novels are person versus society, as in The Scarlet Letter when Hester is forced to face her mistake of adultery due to the obsession of the unforgiving town. An example of an internal conflict is present within Animal Dreams, when Cody must decide where she belongs and
