According to an article from Newsweek in Oct. 2009 called “Where do babies come from?”, today’s world population has reached over 6.6 billion people. Also the article mentioned that in 2009 57.4% of all new born babies who were born this year came from Asia alone. This is an issue because over population can lead to hasty consumption of resources. China who has one of the largest population in the world with over 1.3 billion people, has taken a stance against over population.

Our main topic for today is that fact that there are over 7.2 billion people in the world, with about another billion being added every twelve years, that is about two hundred and twenty thousand people added everyday. With this rapidly producing population comes one big thing, overpopulation, or the function that is to many of a certain species living in a place that does not have the resources to sustain that size of a population. A major example that shows that humans are overpopulated in New York city, New York has approximately 8.4 million people in only about 300 square miles, or the fact that so many people living in the world, and the fact that one in every seven people go to bed hungry every night.25000 of these hungry people died

Many years ago, Aristotle discussed about the best size for a city, and arrived at a conclusion that “a big increase in the number of population would bring a level of poverty on the citizenry. On the economics point of view, as global population is predicted to grow and more countries become more developed, the demand for natural resources will also increase and may be greater than the supply. As the per-capita income of these nations increase, the demand for raw materials for use in electronics, military, farming and urban development will also increase. Because of the global warming issue, green energy and green tech production are expected to rise in developed countries. Unfortunately, future supply of these natural resources may not be able to meet the increasing demand (Supply and Demand, 2013). As our global population count continues to exponentially climb, many people are under the impression the world is overpopulated. A lot of society wonders how we will be able to sustain such a large population. An overpopulated planet could cause or enhance problems such as natural resource depletion, global climate change, and starvation. The majority of people believe overpopulation is our world’s most crucial problem, including me. Or at least I did before I read What to Expect When No One is Expecting. This book definitely made me think twice.

Gioietta Kuo discusses overpopulation as the main problem causing all of life’s problems on earth today. Moreover, if the problem is not rectified, the world faces extinction from a shortage of resources such as food, water, and land. Furthermore, the implied message is that overpopulation needs to be addressed, because without reducing the inhabitants in the world, humanity will run out of the means to sustain even the current population. This article relates to “Connecting the Dots between Species Extinction, Overpopulation, and the Use of Resources” by Marshall Marcus, because Marcus also believes that the extinction of any species can be traced back to the increase of the world’s population. Additionally, both authors feel that overpopulation is the cause for many of earth’s problems such as environmental destruction, climate change, and food shortage to name a few. With all the data, facts and references, I feel this article credible. Using this information in my paper will help argue my opinion on overpopulation.

Every single decade, the population grows at an exponential rate. As of today there are approximately seven billion people on this earth. Every time four babies are born at least two people die. In other words, the more people there are, the less resources there is and there will also be fewer animal species. In Piper Hoffman’s article, Human Overpopulation Threatens Our Survival, says how the rising numbers have caused climate change, rising sea levels, expanding deserts, and even wildlife extinction. In the YouTube video, The Science of Overpopulation, the issue of overpopulation is also explained, as well as how the population has increased in the past decades. Population growth has been increasing dramatically for if humans have existed, but as of more recently have been increasing more dramatically. Many theorists such as Thomas Malthus and the Cornucopians made attempts to try to better understand the trend of overpopulation. Both had very different views towards if population growth was a negative or positive effect on consumption. The true question to both is whether overpopulation or overconsumption is a bigger factor that leads to the environmental problems that are present today. While it could be said, population is growing at an exponential rate, overconsumption is the true problem of what is leading to resource scarcity.
