Chiropractic Medicine One of the most common alternative medical practices is that of chiropractic medicine. The field has definitely come a long way from its humble beginnings and has begun to a major alternative care strategy to be used for a great multitude of complaints and conditions dealing with the back and skeletal structure. Treatment works through manipulating the spine to readjust vertebra placement and is common for back and neck pains and injuries. Treatment works by targeting particular areas of the spine and back that are in misalignment and causing other pain or soreness to become a serious issues within patients looking for relief. Typically, treatment is based on a patient's complaint of back pain or stiffness. The first step is to examine the spine, typically through x-rays in order to determine the problem areas that may be causing the pain the patient is experiencing. After the issue is recognized and determined to be the source of the problem the chiropractic care can begin. This is done through "spinal manipulation" where the vertebra in the spinal cord are adjusted in order to "restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become hypomobile or restricted in their movement as a result of tissue injury" (American Chiropractic Association, 2012). Often times an injury will impact the overall health and well-being of the individual, and treating the misaligned vertebra helps alleviate a number of symptoms and
