Essay Overview of Firefighting as a Career

Matthew E. Barnes was a firefighter who could be called many things including a hero, a friend, a husband, a father and even an angel. The story begins like many 9/11 stories do, with the planes being hijacked, he was one of the men working that day in the New York City Fire Department that would go into the World Trade Center, but would never come out. The 37-year old resident of Monroe, New York was a father to three boys and the husband to Ms. Susan Barnes; he would spend all his available time with his family, somehow slipping out of chores and such just to go fishing with his boys. Two years before the 9/11 he had saved two twins, Isabella and Jacob Kalodner from a fire in their mother, Linda Kalodner’s apartment, by climbing up a 100-foot aerial ladder to the 10th story to save the 6 week old twins.

Fire service personnel, regardless of rank have a duty to protect life and property from fire and other hazards. Other duties include carrying out risk assessments, enforcing fire legislation and educating the community. The fire fighters duties include attending emergency incidents, dealing with fires, flooding, chemical spillages, terrorist incidents and checking water hydrants. All members will need to be disciplined correctly to carry out every aspect of being a fire fighter.

Being a firefighter is everything to me; it’s my dream job. But why did I want to embark on a lifelong, rewarding journey as a fireman? Looking back, I realized that three things really intensified my love for firefighting and sparked my dreams to become a career firefighter. The first was a near fatal car accident that my grand mom was involved in. My next realization is simple - I love helping others and having the potential to do something positive for the community I serve. Finally, the excitement along with the adrenaline I have when I get to go on a call Is like no other feeling; there is no other feeling that I can compare it to.

A firefighter is not just called to fires while that is there name many are trained in emergency medical services (EMS). Three fourths of the calls a firefighter runs on are medical emergencies including car wrecks. Other dispatches include; Tornados, hurricanes, earthquakes, terrorist attacks, or any other life threatening occurrences . Many times firefighters work right alongside law enforcement officers.

We are the most technically advanced nation in the free world but yet we have not been able to reduce the number of firefighter fatalities over the years. Its one of the great mysteries of the world today. Our gear is better than what they wore thirty years ago, its better than what they wore ten years ago and we still lose an average of one hundred firefighters every year. I know that not all are dying in structure fires but just one is one too many.

According the agency of the Department of Homeland Security states that motor vehicles crashes are the leading cause of death for an on-line duty fireman. Other significant causes of death are: caught/trapped (10%), fall (5%), collapse (3%), and other (7%). Intentions of firefighters are to make the community safe as possible, but we the people need to think twice before we do anything else when dealing with fire. The other things that it 's a national problem for firefighters is not wearing their seat belts when driving out to an emergency. They are so focused on saving our lives when first it 's supposed to be the opposite, their safety is first, but firemen put their lives at risk.

Some occupations are meant for those who have the stomach to face challenges. If you are the one who hates routine 9 to 5 job or just warm the chair sitting in an air-conditioned office, then you must take up a wildland firefighting job. The interesting thing about becoming and pursuing a firefighting career is that you will not get bored from the job and will get used to facing challenges. Moreover, the job will will also provide you a hefty paycheck and immense satisfaction for saving environment and lives of people and livestock.

Many things have changed in the fire service during my twenty years. I have witnessed improved staffing, new equipment, new stations, and new technologies making our work environments safer. The knowledge and skills I have acquired throughout my career have come from trial and error, taking classes, and the passing of information from the senior members of the department. The firefighters and officers that guided me throughout my career were mentors, teachers, and role models for not only me but everyone around them. The unfortunate fact is these individuals and key members in other departments are no longer working, nor is their information and knowledge.

In our professions, like in life, we hit crossroads. These crossroads sometimes lead us to better things and other times to dead ends. My career started in nursing due to one of those crossroads. Way before I wanted to do nursing, in college, I followed my own personal philosophy to do whats best for me, no matter what, but I soon realized I had no passion or interest in where my life was going. I was not fulfilled or happy with my accomplishments. I decided to start over, as many of us do at thaty age and accidently started my career as a firefighter. While I worked as a firefighter, I felt I received undeserved respect. Friends and family were proud to brag about my career, but again I didn’t feel full filled. I am grateful for the opportunity I received however after so many years as a firefighter Ive grown to realize the reason I was not happy, was due to the culture/philosophy. They always spoke as if it was us against the world, we were a family outsiders were not welcomed easy, and in a way we segregated ourselves from the rest of the world. The fire department had its own politics, its own rules. As a young single adult I loved it, I had somebody always there to pick up the pieces or vice versa. Still, I knew something was wrong, something was missing. I became a paramedic while still at the fire department and I fell in love with the medical field. It was all easy for me at first, I became one of the top medics and quickly people above noticed and I started
