Unit 13 – Command and Control By Kristian Norris P3 - Explain the skills and personal qualities required for command and control M2 - Assess the skills required for given practical command and control scenarios and compare these to own performance It is very important in the public services that we see many skills and qualities from a personnel to show that they have command and control In this presentation I have used three skills and three qualities, describe them, giving an example and then giving a real life scenario in which I have undergone. Communication - Skill Communications is the passing on of information through multiple ways such as speaking or writing. Good communication is needed as they will be expected to talk …show more content…
They must be able to give out clear, decisive instructions in any crisis or environment knowing with full confidence in themselves. Example When watching the ‘Coppers Series 1 - Episode 5 - Public Order ‘ video you see this demonstrated a lot, mainly when visiting the riots where they don’t have much time to stop and think over what they are going to do. This means that when they are being hit and attacked they have full confidence that what they do next will be justified as they have gone through the training and know the rules so the confidence within themselves to go out and do their jobs is high. Real life scenario When on the Army trip I went on for a week I was undergoing an assault course which I really didn’t want to do as a lot of it involved heights which I am very intimated by. But by talking to my team and the officers they helped me build my confidence to a point where I wanted to get on the course and do as best as I could. Because of my confidence I was able to take on the
I was able to pull many leadership ideas that are applicable in both my military and civilian careers as a National Guardsman. The easiest thing to boil down in the book are the traits people wish to see in leaders, the Be. In research reported by The Leadership Challenge surveying thousands of people in business and government, four results are remarkably consistent- honest, competent, forward-looking, and Inspiring (Hesselbein 48). These are attributes that have become instrumental in identifying successful leadership and should be used as my basis. Within these traits lay four skills that every leader must acquire knowledge and mastery of; Interpersonal, Conceptual, Technical and Tactical skills. The Know. What is profoundly interesting is the authors description of civilian tactical skills "involving negotiating, human relations, and the like are often necessary to achieve objectives" (Hesselbein 52). Being able to effectively and strategically utilize key units (both in and out of the military) to achieve success falls under such tactical skills. The last portion of effective leadership I'll take with me is, Do. The biggest thing to takeaway here is that successful leaders act in three ways: "they pull together in teams…with a unified purpose, they execute to achieve results, and they lead change to leave the organization stronger than they found it" (Hesselbein 55). With emphasis on the latter part, a successful leader leaves the organization in greater health than originally
Transitioning to command from any other leadership challenge in the military requires that an officer experiences a mental shift in his/her approach to exercising the newly granted authority, responsibility and accountability for the unit. Army doctrine suggests that authority, responsibility, and accountability are inherent attributes of command. These attributes of command coupled with the expectations of the commander, demand a new and holistic approach to commandership, which is defined as exercising the art of command through leadership, management, and command.
In this essay I will be analysing the importance and use of command and control also I within a uniformed public service then I will go on to give bad and good examples of where command and control have been used. Command and control is one of the most important things in the uniformed services. Command and control is primary to the way in which the uniformed public services function. Without command and control the uniformed services would not be able to take control of situations which would require them to take control of, and make sure that the situation doesn't get out of hand so that lives are not lost. Command and control is important to the way in which the uniformed public services operate. It is the method by which they perform their tasks. Situations can require immediate and decisive action. Those responsible for command and control must be prepared, trained and practised in the
Command and Control in such a way is a very self-controlled discipline system in organisation. In the London riot case, I in my view could not think that it could work anyway better, then it is working at the moment. I in my view think it actually is very well despite the escalation and a lot of damage that was done. Several of the services had to go through challenging situations and even though they went through a lot of challenging situations, they somehow still managed to uphold developments and be organised. Due to all the squads had strategic commanders which literally obtain authority over the lower ranks officers and this can potentially lead, giver instructions, instruct, guide or finally coach them where essential.
Officers spend approximately seventy percent of their careers in either school or serving as a staff member exercising the science of control. With that, a mental shift is required when the officer assumes command; for most, this transition only occurs two or three times during the span of a career. The commander must now rely on his experience and judgment for he is solely responsible for the success or failure of the organization. Therefore, of immediate importance is assessing the current state of the unit, as the art of command is inherently a human endeavor with the commander as the central figure that not only guides the organization but also empowers subordinate leaders through employing the principles of mission command.
A troop commander on operations also must be a good communicator, in order that his decisions and judgements are understood clearly by those under his command. This is not only essential in ensuring that the task is carried out the way intended but is also crucially important in maintaining a workable relationship with the troop, so that those under ones command understand why decisions have been taken the way they are. The ability to communicate is also
modifying resumes and cover letters before submitting them to an employer. We also discussed how to prepare for an interview. Interviewees need to think of answers to commonly asked questions, work on maintaining confidence and clarity when speaking, and prepare questions for the interviewer.
Hard skills are what you need to train in to be good at. This is because they take practice and it can be studying a subject to be literate in it. You need to be able to show dedication and determination to carry on and achieve. The first hard skill is being able to read as you had to practice at it and improve overtime. Such as at school you were taught it. This is important as if you cannot read then how will you read instructions given by co-workers which could lead to a lack of communication and as a result of this your team could fail. The second hard skill is your job, if this is working in IT this could be in coding programs. This is a hard skill as you would have needed to learn this in the process. Last of all there is your school subjects such as maths and English which are taught year on year which make you improve and you are
In reviewing my own leadership style and emotional intelligence domains and competencies, I see myself as a commander and pacesetter. I decided to use the tools in the book to discover what skills I have and what skills I would like to possess and of course, ascertain any gaps. I still have to experiment and practice new behaviors, thoughts, and feelings, but here is my self-assessment. Here is my assessment:
willing to risk their health and life. To make the job easier different styles or types of policing

One thing I take strongly about being a leader (manager) is confidence in my decision-making and my team’s ability to stand behind me. The military has taught me to think quickly on my feet, identify the situation, evaluate
In the operational environment challenges include national security, local laws and customs, diplomacy and immediate threats. In the garrison environment, challenges include family issues, the lack of knowledge of available resources and less control over Soldiers (Ratwani & Fite, 2012). Leaders lacking self-awareness will have difficulty influencing others or attaining their goals related to leader growth and development. Also leaders that are lacking a clear sense of their identity will not want to develop or improve their leadership skills. The incomplete or inaccurate sense of identity hinders the growth of leadership anywhere. In each environment, the ability to lead and inspire others begins with an understanding of oneself, which ultimately determines a leader’s character and helps to develop their critical problem solving skill (HQ, Department of the Army, 2012, p.
Throughout the past several weeks I have learned so much more about myself, and have gained a more insightful meaning of what is needed in order to be an effective leader. As a Non Commissioned Officer within the United States Army, who is charged with the defense, and the production of our nation finest, the phrase “no one is more professional than I”, must not be taken lightly. Additionally, I have long pledged, that in order not become like the toxic leadership once appointed over me, to seek out any valuable information that will aid in the strengthening of my leadership abilities. The development of leadership skills “give people the capacity to influence others, and are a critical component in successful leadership” (Northouse, 2015). Therefore, gaining a better understanding of how to properly teach, coach, and lead, will not only help me in my conquest in becoming an excellent NCO, but also support my becoming of a better person.
