PROBLEM What is the one subject area that suffers the most during testing? Writing is our country’s greatest failure. We need to teach better writing and that happens through better instruction in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Writing can be explained through reading, note taking, and journaling. Students do not write enough and their writing is not from a varied amount of genres, such as expository, narrative, descriptive, persuasive, and journaling and note taking. My personal significance in planning my action plan was that young students should be expected to write. Not only should they be expected to write when they enter school, but they should also continue to write and grow as writers into the upper…show more content…
Children may interpret the beginning and ending sound, but possibly not the middle sound. 1. Children can write as early as two years old. Writing can be as simple as activity centers, journals, or morning messages. Connecting the child’s name to letters and sounds is the most valuable. 2. Inviting children to share the pen is how they take ownership of their writing. Some children will understand quickly and others need more time. “Effectively incorporating support for children’s varying writing skills provides a gateway to developing other critical literacy skills.” (Caulkins, 1986) 3. Children should write about real life reasons. (Romei, 2009) It could be as simple as signing in for attendance, making a list, writing notes, writing letters that express feelings, journal writing, monthly newsletter writing, literature writing, or drawing. “Reading and writing skills develop simultaneously and are interconnected. Progress in one fuels development of the other.” (Caulkins, 1986) Outcomes Outcomes are that students will progress from a two to three year old writer, to a Kindergarten writer, to a middle school writer, to a high school, and graduate writer. The outcome is that students will be able to write sentences with one capital letter, appropriate punctuation, spaces between words, and possibly phonetic or correct spelling.
