Art is a diverse range of creating oral or visual artworks. Artists can express their emotions and show their imaginative skills on something as simple as a piece of paper. Modern artists include Rene Magritte, August Macke, and Franz Marc, but what about not so modern artists? Artists like Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh existed in the 19th through the 20th centuries where art was a great factor in their everyday lives. The 19th and 20th centuries offered three very distinct styles of painting that changed the way people view art today. One common form of art during the 19th and 20th centuries is Impressionism. These artists first faced extreme denunciation from the French conventional, meaning ordinary, artists community. Claude Monet is known as the founder of French impressionist painting. Perhaps the most exceptional artist of the abstract style was Pablo Picasso. Georges Gurdjieff was also around during these centuries and was an influential early 20th-century mystic, meaning he had a certain outlook on life that makes one somewhat impulsive. He believed that painting was a way to "open your soul". The most important characteristic of abstract art is that it has no recognizable subject that has been painted.
Lastly, the most prodigious way of painting from the 19th and 20th centuries is Realism. Unlike Abstract, Realism does have a certain "subject" being painted. Winslow Homer is regarded by many as the greatest American painter of the nineteenth century. He was greatly known for his works in the style of realism. Edouard Manet was also one of the first 19th century artists to paint modern life in the transition from Realism to Impressionism.
