The Central Idea of History Repeating itself in “The Palace Theif” In “The Palace Theif” by Ethan Canin, explores the Central Idea of History Repeating itself through the interactions of Mr.Hundert and Sedgewick Bell. The interaction of these characters demonstrates the ways in which personality, experience,family,friends, shape an invidividual’s history. The Central Idea of History repeating itself appears in the beginning of the story when the narrator is describing Sedgewick Bell, for example the fifteen boys in Sedgewick Bell class, were all intimidated into sensing the foolishness of Sedgewick Bell”(158).The choices Sedgewick Bell makes by being a dullard well affect his life. “Look he said there is a rumor that you keep a pistol in your drawer “Hogwash” “will you open it for me and than Mr.Hundert says no”(180). This text develop the Central Idea of History repeating itself , that man are used to lying and they just can’t stop lying, the reason Mr.Hundert didn’t wanna open the drawer is because he knew that there was a pistol in the drawer, since men don’t like to tell the truth the easy way is to lie, throughout history man just keep on lying, this develope the Idea of History Repeating itself. “How come you didn’t say anything about me cheating, Mr.Hundert says its a complicated matter” (171).This text focus on the Idea of History Repeating itself because Mr.Hundert is lying again, his lying because he said say something about Sedgewick cheating but tells
