While survival would have been a key goal for the first Tennesseans as the years went by, the four prehistoric tribes evolved and developed increasingly more advanced techniques to move from simply surviving to living. These four prehistoric tribes include the Paleo tribe, the Archaic tribe, the Woodland tribe and the Mississippian tribe. These tribes dealt with changing climates and fluctuating food sources, which defined their developing lifestyles and left clues for future generations to study and share.

In ancient Rome, there were two classes the Patricians who were the descendants of the senators appointed by King Romulus, and the Plebeians or plebs who were the free and lower class people. There was a growing tension between the two classes right from the foundation of Rome. The tension escaladed following the fall of Etruscan king and the declaration of Rome as a republic; the rise of aristocrats? leadership.

Patricians hold all the offices in ancient Rome and plebeians who outnumbered them were mostly farmers, craftsmen and soldiers. In the ancient city of Alba Longa in Rome, there was a tradition between Patricians and Plebeians. Patricians were land-owning aristocrats who served as priest, magistrates, lawyers, and judges. While Plebeians on the other hand were the poorer class who served as craftsmen, laborers, and merchants. Even though in Rome every free male was a citizen, not every citizen received equal opportunities. The Senate was primarily made up of Patricians, who responsibilities were creating the law. In an attempt to protect themselves Plebeians formed their own legislative assembly, called the Consilium Plebis (Council of Plebeians).

Rome felt under constant threat, at the beginning of the Roman Republic. The Roman Republic was initially ruled by the rich and powerful. This ruling began “After the overthrow of the monarchy, Roman nobles, eager to maintain their position of power, established a republican form of government”(p.129). Later on, this power to the rich would prove chaos. The patricians who “were descendants of the original senators appointed during the period of the kings were great landowners, who constituted an aristocratic governing class”(p.129). The plebeians did not have this power of authority like the patricians did. The plebeians were “constituted the considerably larger group of non-patrician large landowners, less wealthy landholders, artisans, merchants, and small farmers”(p.129). These people could vote with the patricians but could not be elected into office, they could not marry someone out of the patricians and vice versa, it was forbidden for these groups to intertwine.

The " Struggle of the Orders" --a struggle between patricians and plebeians had the right to vote in the Assembly, but their votes were usually influenced by the patricians.
