Pancreatic Cancer:
A Complex Disease In 2000, there were 28,300 new cases of pancreatic cancer and 28,000 deaths, making the mortality rate for pancreatic cancer at a high of ninety nine percent. Over the years, researchers have found more about the pancreatic tumor to have to mortality rate to go down. Between 2000 and 2009, the mortality went down by sixteen percent. (Panno) Pancreatic cancer can be rare, hard to treat, and get diagnosed before too late; the low chances of survival make pancreatic cancer the deadliest of all of the cancers. For cancer deaths, pancreatic cancer is ranked at the fourth highest cause of deaths. In 2009, the mortality rate for pancreatic cancer decreased

One common symptom is jaundice, which is the darkening of skin and the yellowing of the whites of eyes. Jaundice is caused by the tumor blocking the common duct in the pancreas and causing a buildup of bilirubin, substance in liver, in blood and tissues.(An Overview, Panno) Even though jaundice is a symptom of pancreatic cancer, at times jaundice can be caused by liver diseases such as gallstones and hepatitis. (Panno) Another symptom could be abdominal pain by the tumor pushing the organs around the pancreas. Pain can also be from the tumor invading nearby nerves and if the tumor is blocking the digestive tract. When the tumor blocks the digestive tract, some symptom digestive problems such as poor appetite, indigestion, nausea, and vomiting. This symptom can also be caused by change on the amount of pancreatic enzymes produced. Some patients of pancreatic cancer also notice a change in their weight. This is from the cancer causing the body to burn more calories than normal, break down different muscles, and decrease the person’s appetite. The patient may also notice a change of appetite or desire for different foods. (An …show more content…
The doctor may also take a blood test to determine if the jaundice is due to pancreatic cancer or liver disease. (Panno) Once the patient is diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, they can choose from different treatment plans. When determining the person’s treatment plan, they take consider their age and expected lifespan, other serious health conditions, the stage of the cancer, if surgery can remove cancer, likelihood of curing the cancer, and how the person feels about side effects. For many patients, the part that most important is the controlling of pain. Some treatments for the cancer include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and other drugs. (Treating) Treating pancreatic cancer is very difficult due to the dense outer shell around the pancreatic tumor and nearly impossible to penetrate with cancer-killing drugs. “Wall is so tough that clinical trials with medications that are experimental designed to breach barrier had to be abandoned mainstream, drug so harsh they sicken already ailing patients,” said Doctor Abram Handly-Santana, a researcher who specializes in pancreatic cancer. (Ricks) Even though treating pancreatic cancer is difficult, some doctor decide to perform surgery to determine if the tumor is removeable and to determine the staging of the cancer to prescribe the best treatment. (Panno) The best
Pancreatic Cancer is cancer of an organ in the human body called the pancreas, which is located behind the lower part of the stomach. The function of this organ is to secrete certain essential enzymes to digest food and also secrete hormones to metabolize sugars such as insulin and glucagon (Mayoclinic). People get pancreatic cancer when the cells of the pancreas develop genetic mutations; and these can form in both the exocrine and endocrine cells of the pancreas, but exocrine tumors are more common than endocrine tumors. Because this cancer spreads very quickly throughout the body and the symptoms of the disease don’t usually appear until the cancer is at an advanced stage, it is a leading cause of death
What the cancer did, In 2015 more than 48,000 people were infected with pancreatic cancer. in America pancreas is almost in the top 10 most common cancers in the world. pancreatic cancer is a disease in the tissues of
There are several prognostic factors can be detected in patients with locally advanced or metastatic pancreatic cancer, these factors includes:
According to Professor John Neoptolemos, "There are approximately 7,000 new cases each year - but it is one of the most lethal cancers." The main reason for the low survival rate from pancreatic cancer is due to its difficulty in finding this cancer early. By the time a person has symptoms, the cancer has often reached a large size and spread to other organs. Because the pancreas is deep inside the body, the doctor cannot see or feel tumors during a routine physical exam. There are currently no blood tests or other tests that can easily find this cancer early in people without symptoms. Tests for certain genes in people with a family history of the disease can help tell if they are at higher risk for cancer. There are some new tests for finding pancreatic cancer early in people with a strong family history of the disease, but these tests are complicated and expensive. Some symptoms of pancreatic cancer include jaundice, a yellow color of the eyes and skin caused by a substance buildup in the liver, pain in the belly area or in the middle of the back, significant weight loss over a number of months, loss of appetite, digestive problems including nausea, vomiting, pain that tends to be worse after eating, a swollen gallbladder that is enlarged, blood clots that form in the veins or cause problems with fatty tissue under the skin, and diabetes. If the doctor has any reason to suspect pancreatic cancer, certain tests will be done to see if the disease is really
Cancer is the main cause of death in the world, estimating 8.2 million fatalities in 2012 alone
The pancreas is a glandular organ that serves as two glands in one: As a hormone-producing endocrine gland that produces different important hormones, including insulin, glucagon and somoatostaina as well as serves as a digestive exocrine gland that secrets pancreatic juice which has enzymes that help break down food after it has left the stomach. pancreas is both an exocrine and endocrine cell which is arranged in clusters that is known as Langerhans. Pancreatic cancer is caused by Adenocarcinoma which is cancer of exocrine cell and this happens
Pancreatic cancer is the cancer that appears quickly and many die just as quick. Pancreatic cancer is the least known cancer to the medical world; puzzling doctors because most are not sure what diagnosis to look for. However, the risk factors include smoking, diabetes, and obesity. Studies show that pancreatic cancer has a higher percentage in the African American community due to environmental risk factors (John Hopkins Pathology, 2012).
Pancreatic carcinoma (P.C) is a malignant disease of the pancreas and one of the top ten leading causes of cancer deaths in the UK. This type of cancer is one of the few which has shown a small improvement in the survival rate. On average, the age at which patients are diagnosed with such disease is at 71 years of age and with a minimum of 40 years old in rare accounts. Whilst the risk of developing such disease is greater in developed than developing countries, various factors either lifestyle factors or hereditary can metamorphose into risk factors and become cancer causing. The pathophysiology of this type of cancer is complex and involves modification of the DNA by various ways such as point mutation, indels, gene rearrangement and more. Early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is difficult as it is an organ found quite deep in the body so any anomalies co go unnoticed during routine examinations. The incidence aswell as the mortality of
Pancreatic Cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Currently there is no cure for this cancer and all available treatments simply prolong the life of the patient. Diagnosing pancreatic cancer rarely occurs at the onset of the disease due to the location of the pancreas in the body. Symptoms such as weight loss and upper abdominal pain do not show up until it is too late. Enzymes produced by tumors known as tumor markers are not reliable until the disease has well progressed. Once you have been diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer there are different types of treatments that are offered to prolong your life.
Major age group with acute pancreatitis was 21-30 years (45.65%). There were significant differences in age group of patients (at P< 0.05) [Table2]. In our study all patients had pancreatic oedema. 12 patients (26.08%) had gallstones, 7 patients (15.21%) had pseudo cyst, 8 (17.4%) had ascities and 7 patients (15.21%) had hepatosplenomegaly [Table3]. There was increase in serum amylase level in all patients. Hypocalcaemia was found in 7 patients (15.2%). In 11 cases (23.95) bilirubin level was raised. Prothrombin time was increased in 3 patients (6.5%). In all patients haemoglobin level was normal. We followed Ranson’s criteria to assess the severity and prognosis of the disease. Cholecystectomy was applied for 19 (41.30%) patients. Other operative procedures such as, cholecystogastrostomy and necrosectomy was done for 3 (6.52%) and 2 (4.34%) respectively. There was no need to use any operative procedures for 22 (47.82%) patients [Table4]. 3 patients (6.5%) were died out of 46
Approximately 3% of cancer patients are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Though multiple options exist, sometimes surgery is the best method of treatment. For patients whose cancer has not yet spread, there are a surprising number of pancreatic cancer treatment options that attack the disease before it becomes unmanageable. Because surgery is so often paired with other treatments, it is important to know the full extent of your possible treatment pairings.
Pancreatic cancer is currently number four in cancer related deaths for both male and female. Why is pancreatic cancer awareness not reconsidered like breast cancer (second most common deaths in women.) Pancreatic cancer kills just about or more than breast cancer.
Every year, thousands of people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The further along their disease progresses, the more they suffer both physically and mentally. The humane thing to do is to allow these people to choose whether or not to end their lives before this painful and inevitable conclusion is reached.
It is estimated that this year, about 28,630 people in the United States only could be diagnosed with a tumor. 23,800 of those people are adults, and 4,830 are children. And that is just this year. Who knows how many people will be diagnosed with a tumor next year, or the year after that. Tumors are a problem that we need to stop.
Cancer is one of the common health problems worldwide. In the United States, one in four deaths is due to cancer (Rebecca et al., 2013). In year 2012, there were 14.1 million new cancer cases, 8.2 million cancer-related deaths and 32.6 million people living with cancer (within 5 years of diagnosis) in 2012 worldwide. Eight million (57%) of new cancer cases, 5.3 million (65%) of the cancer deaths and 15.6 million (48%) of the 5-year prevalent cancer cases occurred in the less developed regions (Globocan 2012). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in the year 2005, cancer caused 13 % of death after cardiovascular diseases.
