Have you ever heard of an Ailuropoda Melanoleuca? Most likely not, but I bet you have heard of a panda bear. Both are correct ways of recognizing the animal, one just sounds a little fancier. The panda bear has been around for approximately three million years and we are still learning new things about them all the time. Pandas may seem like very boring creatures because of their lack of activity during their lifetimes, but they are actually extremely fascinating and not to mention very adorable. We’ve all had a time where we’ve seen a cute, little, baby panda at the zoo and thought, “I want one!”. There are so many interesting facts about pandas that everyone should know. You will be learning about the background of pandas, why their population …show more content…
The population of pandas has been decreasing rapidly since 1990. Habitat loss and poaching are the two major reasons for the pandas becoming on the brink of extinction. Humans have been destroying the forests in which pandas live for decades now, causing them to have to relocate to regions they were not familiar with. Losing their natural habitat meant that they also lost their main food source. Pandas would starve causing hundreds to die. The loss of their home also left them extremely vulnerable to predators in the new area. All of the little effects of pandas losing their habitat are what caused a major drop in their population. The second biggest reason for the decline in their population is poaching. Hunters and poachers target pandas mainly for their big fur coats. Poaching is illegal everywhere and is a big reason for population decrease for other animals as well. The third reason for the drop in pandas is their inability to reproduce quickly. The female pandas are only fertile once a year for a period of two or three days. They usually only have one pup and that pup stays with the mother for at least two years. After that, the panda is on its own. However, female pandas only need to be about 5 years old before they can start reproducing, but the catch is males have to be about 7 years old. The demand for baby pandas is extremely high so that the population to grow, but the time it takes to do so is hurting the population more. With all that said, the population of the panda bear is decreasing faster than it is increasing, which is a major problem that many organizations are working to figure out a
Pandas have undergone an interesting history as they evolved from their Kretzoiarctos beatrix ancestors. They look a lot different than they did before. They’ve evolved to now have six toes, which help it eat different types of bamboo. Thanks to the bamboo, its adaptations have changed, along with the panda itself.
They are approximately 1,600 panda bears that live in the wild all over the world. However, there are more panda's in China than anywhere else. With this being said, and China's continual growth, this, causes destruction to the panda's habitat. China uses bamboo for construction and therefore, removes the main source of food for the panda bear.
They had been combined with other sand efforts to keep them from being extinct. Giant pandas are similar to other bears in their general looks and the way they walk and climb and their skull is the similar to the bears and,the pandas are known as bears, because the more we help the pandas the better we can save them. The panas are the same as bears the DNA cells scientists have conflicted that pandas are relate with bears. The is how pandas and bears are alike.
According to a reliable website” The giant panda is a well known and well-loved species that is being driven to extinction by habitat loss. It has become one of the most endangered mammals in the world, with only 1,600 of them left” (Exploring nature education). Also According to another credible website about polar bears, “Polar bears might not be endangered but they are one category off of becoming endangered, there are 20,000-25,000 left worldwide” (animalpawnation). As you can see the Giant panda is classified as endangered. There are only about 1,600 left in the world. 1,600 may be a lot but surprisingly not to many scientists and researchers. On the other hand polar bears are classified as threatened one step away from becoming endangered. There are only about 20,000- 25,000 left worldwide.Other than being endangered and threatened they also share many similar characteristics. The giant panda and polar bear are both similar and different in their physical qualities, habitat, and diet.
With a touch of humor, geology, evolutionary theory, biology, cartoon characters and even some references to baseball, The Panda’s Thumb definitely makes excellent reading for people with all types of interests. The old cliché, “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” or in this case, title, holds true for The Panda’s Thumb. Theories concerning adaptations of the panda are only a fraction of the many exciting facts held within the pages of this publication. Gould is able to put what he writes about in words that are easy to understand without compromising the quality of the information. Many questions are raised in this book. Some questions that science just can’t answer at the
- Pandas are becoming endangered due and one the main reasons is habitat destruction. Since the population in China continues to grow, pandas' habitat gets taken over by development, pushing them into smaller and less livable areas.
Because of their low-energy diet they avoid stressful situations, preferring shallow slopes and solitary living. They use scent markers to avoid one another. Giant pandas don’t roar like other bears, but baaaa like goats, or or honk, growl and bark to talk. Cubs whine and croak for attention.
One of the reasons that giant pandas are going extinct is because they are
The Red Panda lives in the Himalayas (Southeast Asia Mountains, China), the temperate, forest mountain regions of that part, in the mountains. The Red Panda’s hard jaw and strong teeth, help the animal eat its primary food source, bamboo, much like it’s cousin, the Great Panda. Some Distinctive features of the Red Panda are white colored cheeks and ears, red stripes across their side, and of course the spots above its muzzle. The Red Panda is officially an endangered species across the world. They have fur all across their body, to keep them warm in the winter, and extra protection.
Due to the lack of knowledge about this species, the red panda was first recorded by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (and Natural Resources,) also known as IUCN, as Vulnerable in 1994. Shortly after this revelation there was an increase in interest, by conservationists, to pursue additional information and protection for this species. In 1996, the red panda was assessed and digressed to the Endangered status; the species remained that way for 12 years until another assessment was taken, and showed improvement in 2008, recording the red panda as Vulnerable once again. Unfortunately, due to an increase of human activity on the red panda habitat has spurred another decline in the population for the red panda. Angela Glatston, a red panda expert, assisted in the evaluation of the red panda for the IUCN in 2015; Glatston concluded her study and wrote via an email interview. “There is a structured form to complete which asks for information on distribution, numbers, threats, etc. Then I looked at criteria for status. The information on red panda suggested endangered so that was my recommendation. This report and recommendation are reviewed by the IUCN, and in this case they were accepted (2016).” As of April 2015, according to the IUCN, the red panda has returned to its status as
With the hype of a new panda at the local zoo, many people flock to these furry faced fluff balls. After the magic and awe factor of watching them chew on bamboo and make squeaky sounds, Panda's lose their appeal because, in reality, they do not really do anything other than sitting all day. Indeed, a worker who doesn't pull their weight is not an asset.
The population of giant pandas is decreasing so rapidly that it has reached the point that they are considered an endangered species. These black and white bears reside mainly in China where seventeen percent of the total population of pandas reside. They are habituated in bamboo forests, which are not only the panda 's’ home, but also their main source of food. A panda 's diet consists of ninety percent bamboo and ten percent of mushrooms, insects, fish, plants and other small rodents. These bamboo forests are being taken from them, because the human population is constantly expanding and using their bamboo forests as land for growing crops or to build roads. Combined with the natural dying on bamboo and logging, these defenseless panda bears are forced to seek new areas and see whether or not there is a sufficient amount of bamboo for them to consume, although many of them fail to do so and end up dying of starvation instead. As of today, there are only twenty nine diminished and fragmented areas that have the appropriate habitat to support the remaining panda bears. China’s pandas have been threatened with extinction, suffered from low birth rates, and have been ridiculed by human’s interference with their habitat; now they are faced with another obstacle, starvation.
Panda Bears mainly live in Central China in bamboo forests with coniferous and broadleaf trees that are 5000 to 10000 feet tall. They enjoy spending their time in cool and wet areas. When considering a place to live, Panda Bears look for two features; tall bamboo trees and a nearby stream.
What animal is black and white and loved all over the world? If you guessed the giant panda, you're right! The giant panda is also known as the panda bear, bamboo bear, or in Chinese as Daxiongmao, the "large bear cat." Actually, its scientific name means "black and white cat-footed animal." Giant pandas are found only in the mountains of central China. They live in dense bamboo and coniferous forests at altitudes of 5,000 to 10,000 feet. The mountains are covered in heavy clouds with torrential rains or dense mist throughout the year. Giant pandas are bear-like in shape with striking black and white markings.
The Giant Panda is one of the most misunderstood animals on the planet. For many years, it was believed to be a type of racoon, like the similarly named red panda. However, genetics testing and observation have revealed that the panda is in fact, a bear. It has several adaptations that make it unusual. First is the fact that it has six digits on the front paws, giving it an opposable thumb ideal for holding onto the stalks of bamboo which it consumes in great amounts. The genitalia of the male are rear-pointing and small which is also decidedly bearish, and much more like those of the red panda. It has only been since 1995 that the Panda has been officially considered a bear.
