Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. I am Lily Buchanan, a passionate advocate for the life of the pangolin. I intend to talk today about the eight endangered species of this creature, two of which have been recognised as critically endangered. My aim is to spread awareness of the pangolin, so that no one here will leave today ignorant of their situation. Unfortunately, the less attractive or “cute” animals of the world have less support and recognition, right when they need it most. Would it be fair to say that simply because an animal is not aesthetically pleasing for humans, their species deserves to become extinct? The pangolin has had an 80 million year evolution to today, leaving them nocturnal and with no teeth so they are unable to chew. However, they have a 16 inch tongue when extended, which is actually longer than their entire body. Additionally, the tongue starts in the abdomen and 7 out of 8 of the species of pangolin are nocturnal. This is because of their abnormally small eyes. If this isn't enough to consolidate your belief that pangolins really are the world's most ugly animal, they emit a noxious-smelling acid, similar to a skunk. The young pangolin is six inches long and weighs 12 ounces at birth. They are mostly found in Africa and Asia; with the African long-tailed species living in trees and the others digging holes so big a human could stand in them. Also, male pangolins are 50% larger than female ones, and the Indian species reach up to 90% bigger. They have added protection from 900-1000 keratin scales coating the body.
