The article “Not in my fridge” by Jeffery M. Smith elaborately discussed the health hazards of genetically modified (GM) products. This article has opened my eyes and revealed my ignorance of how unmindful of what I have eaten for years. I was very alarmed by many of the things I have learned in this article. After learning the side-effect of GM food, I was certainly concerned for our health. Moreover, learning that the biotech company’s strong stand in advocate of GM products as well as the United States governments and the Food and Drug administration (FDA) cover up of serious safety issues of GM highly disturbed me.
This year Millards South Student Council has decided to start our own student pantry. Our council really wanted to focus on a big project that would benefit our student body. Our administrative staff informed us that 27% of our student body needs financial assistance and qualifies for free and reduced lunch services. This number is significantly higher that our neighboring high school.Once we found this news out, our council knew that we wanted to relate our project to helping them. The first step we did was create a project proposed form and present it to our administrator to start the process of creating the pantry. On Tuesday, October 3rd Monica Banks, a Wake Forest Divinity School student and a co-founder of New Communion, shared her experiences about her career/field of study and how it began to intermingle with food. Banks first began her career with a degree in business leadership and management and opening approximately 40 restaurant venues. After years of experience, she was looking for something more in life. After pursuing nursing she felt her calling was in the pastoral field and specifically surrounded food and poverty. As a second year student at Wake’s Divinity School, Banks was required to complete a group project, which led her the idea of the mobile pantry—now new communion. Least of the Brethren is a local food pantry in Pinkneyville, it is where I am choosing to plunge for my assignment. I am choosing this culture because of the high number of low socioeconomic students that attend school in our area. The officers attended and upon arrival the officers were informed by the unit clerk that the patient has left the unit. The officers were also told that the patient was going to Cafeteria. Have you noticed the issues of how people in our culture think about and acquire food? For this assignment I have observed food acquisition at a grocery store. The data collection is consisted of two separate parts: fieldwork notes part one and brief interviews part two. The verbal questionnaire’s (mini- interviews) lasted from 2-5 minutes per person out of the ten individuals. The observations are broken down into blocks, meaning I observed the exterior and interior of the store. I under took the project at the Whole Foods Market located in Beverly Hills. I have shopped at whole foods numerous times, but decided that I should observe a location I have not been to. As a result my observations of the store do not get clouded by my opinions.
