“She loved mysteries so much that she became one” is the most popular quote from John Green’s Paper Towns novel. In the story a spunky, outgoing teen named Margo Roth Spiegelman climbs back into Quentin Jacobsen’s life through a set of midnight heists against Margo’s ex-boyfriend. Although Quentin is thrilled to have Margo back in his life, his world is turned upside down when she mysteriously disappears the next day. Quentin and his friends embark on a series of adventures following the clues she left in hopes of finding her. John Green brilliantly constructs this novel to leave the readers asking, “Why did Margo leave?” The name of the novel, Paper Towns, in fact could be used to explain one of the reasons Margo left Orlando. From the outside it seems that Margo has the perfect life with numerous friends, a popular boyfriend, and a nice house. However Margo doesn’t feel like her life is as flawless as it seems. As Quentin and Margo look over the city on the night of their heist, Margo says, “It’s a paper town … I’ve lived here for eighteen years and I have never once in my life come across anyone who cares about anything that matters”(Green 55). …show more content…

Leaving town gives her a fresh start and a way to stand out among others. Margo is already different from the stereotypical teenage girl. She believes in the use of random capitalization and often runs away from home, but always returns within a few days. Most of the town, including Margo’s parents, believe that she is just looking for attention so they don’t seem too concerned. These examples show that she does things just to be different from others. Margo shows that she does not want to become the same as everyone else by saying, “I’d get sucked right back in and I’d never get out.” Obviously being just like everyone else will not suffice for Margo so she packs up her bags and makes her way to Agloe, New York, a real paper
