I have read two stories from the Bible in which I am going to compare and contrast. One story is called “Cain and Abel” and the other is called “Parable of the Prodigal Son”. One similarity of the two are the overall moral of the stories. The moral of the stories is that jealous hearted people never prosper. One difference is, in “Cain and Abel” Cain first messed up when he decided that he wasn’t going to give God his best from the garden. In “Parable of the Prodigal Son” the older brother continued to do right by his father and did everything he was supposed to but he messed up when he grew jealousy in his heart. Last but not least, another similarity is that God never left the bad characters in each story when they went astray or did bad things. To begin with, jealousy is a sin and it should not weigh on your heart. In the story “Cain and Abel” Cain was jealous of his brother. He was jealous of him because of the love that he was receiving from his parents and his father God. Abel received that love because he was kind and pure to his parents and even his jealous brother. Abel also gave his biggest sheep to God. Cain didn’t want to give him his best from his field because he was being selfish and he didn’t feel God deserved it. In the end, Cain became so angry that he killed his brother. He had to leave his town and move far away to start over. That was punishment to him because he was scared that people would see him and kill him for what he has done. In the story “Parable of the Prodigal Son” the older brother was jealous of his younger brother because his father threw him a party and bought him nice things. He was jealous because he was doing everything right for his father meanwhile his younger brother was being disobedient, using him for his money and going astray. He only returned when he ran out of money and needed him. He thought that his father would be upset with him but he was the opposite. The older brother felt like he was the one who deserved all of those things being as though he was doing right the entire time. In both of these stories, the jealous characters did not make it far at all. Jealousy is not a good thing to feel against others. One difference of the two stories is what
One twin creates good and the other creates evil. In the first story, the better natured twin creates anything good. For example, animals for humans to eat and digest. His brother created all natural predators, so that the humans would need to develop skills to feed themselves. “Whatever the good natured twin would do, his brother would scheme some way of altering it.” But in this story, good and evil balance each other like yin-yang. Compared to the Christian story, they don’t. In the Judeo-Christian story, the twins are named Cain and Abel, children of Adam and Eve. Abel kept flocks and Cain worked the soil. One day, Cain offered God some of his fruits from his soil, and Abel offered God fat portions from some of his flock. In Genesis 4, it says, “The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.” After that, Cain told his brother Abel to go out to the field. While they were in the field, Cain attacked Abel and killed him. So in this story, the twins really do nothing for Earth and instead one kills the other brother out of anger. Cain got punished from God for killing his brother, which is a
The sin stories in the Book of Genesis address theological, cosmic, social, and ethical questions. These sin stories, The Fall of Man, Cain and Abel, and Noah and the Flood, and The Tower of Babel show the functions of myths and demonstrate man's likeliness to sin. These myths let the readers learn of the culture, beliefs, and foundation of the time.
Cain and Abel are the first two sons of Adam and Eve. Cain is the eldest and Abel is the youngest. Cain is described as the tiller of the ground whereas Abel is the keeper of sheep. Both men know that God requires an offering, but the offering of Cain is quite different from that of Abel. Abel fears God, and because of this he offers the best of his flock to the Lord. He kills the animal and makes a sacrifice of blood. Abel understands that the shedding of innocent blood for the forgiveness of sin is acceptable. He also knows that this action of his is representative of surrendering his heart to God. By contrast, Cain brings what he has grown and gathered from the earth. In a way, a foolish man would think
Sibling rivalry is a crushing reoccurrence in East of Eden. First Adam and his brother Charles, then Adam's sons Cal and Aron, act out a drama of jealousy and competition that seems fated Lee calls the story of Cain and Abel the "symbol story of the human soul." Steinbeck illustrates the central theme of good versus evil through two of his primary characters Samuel Hamilton, who represents goodness, and Cathy Ames, who represents pure evil. Both characters play crucial roles in the spiritual development of the protagonist, Adam Trasks and influence of on his sons and how it effects them.
The Parable of the Prodigal Son is from the King James Bible in the book of Luke, Chapter 15 Verse’s 11-32. It is a story about a man with two sons in which the younger son asked his father for all of the goods that he would inherit. After getting what he would inherit, he travelled on a journey to a far country and completely wasted everything that his father had given to him. When he had spent everything and became poor, there arose a mighty famine in the land and he began to be in want. So he returned to his father and said to his father that he was no longer good enough to be considered one of his sons, he thought that he should now be considered a servant rather than one of his children. He claimed that he had sinned against heaven and
Some people know jealousy as "green envy." Some people just know it as plain old jealousy, but everyone knows jealousy and the pain it can cause. Jealousy is a nasty emotion, causing nice people to act mean, calm people to act rash, and even the steadiest of tempers to rise. It lashes out with harsh actions and words, hurting many innocent victims. Jealousy causes people to act in abnormal ways, devious ways of hatred and deception, ways that most people would not normally act. Ultimately, jealousy is caused by a certain insecurity that a person has. This insecurity comes from not having what you desire, allowing you to be jealous of those who have it. Three main things that cause insecurity
In the bible there is a story about two boys named Cain and Abel. “ One day, the two brothers bring sacrifices to God. Cain offers grain from his fields, while Abel offers the fattest portion of his flocks.” God favored Abel's gift over Cain's gift. God showed Abel more appreciation for the gift he gave him, leaving Cain by himself feeling hopeless and jealous about how Abel got way more affection and appreciation by god than he did. Cain got so
Another biblical example of a moral or intrinsic evil is the result of Adam and Eves disobedience of God’s free will in the Garden of Eden and becomes even more clear to them with the birth of their two sons, Cain and Abel. The birth of these two sons brings the evil of lethal violence to society. It begins with rivalry amongst siblings of jealousy and family fighting. Cain’s jealousy finally ends with him making the decision to commit murder and kill his brother Abel. This decision of moral or intrinsic evil made by Cain is the first taking of human life and the deterioration of humanity’s condition. The act of murder is not an act of God, it is an act of man and because of man’s action, evil succeeds in society. Again, the problem of
“Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin is a short story that discusses several themes that allude to and reflect the Bible. The relationship between the narrator and his brother, Sonny, clearly mimics the dynamic between Cain and Abel. Sonny’s drug abuse and imprisonment leave his brother feeling responsible after the death of their mother. As tension grows between them, the narrator turns against his brother, similarly to Cain. However, the narrator eventually fulfills the role of his brother’s keeper and helps him get back on his feet.
History, is the story among which all literary works are linked to, and this statement is true more than any other in John Steinbeck’s East of Eden. Whether one believes that all stories in the Bible have actually happened or not, at least some concepts of them did. How would a writer arrive at the ideas of two brothers and jealousy of love, without having seen it or felt it before? Yet again, how would these ideas survive for so long, unless many people felt them as well and connected to them. The story of Cain and Abel has been around a long time, but the feelings of jealousy between siblings longer still. What stories offer, are not only a feeling of understanding to a child, but a lesson to be learned as well. It is a common cliche, that without knowledge of it history is destined to repeat itself, but if stories are born from past experiences and these too are contained in the archives of history than is it possible to say the same for those as well? What John Steinbeck does in his book is show that without the understanding of the possibility in choices, some of history 's greatest and oldest stories are able to continue to new generations to haunt their lives. In the use of metaphors, analogies, and symbolism, John Steinbeck displays the Cain and Abel story in two generations, and the horrors along with the beauties that the possibility of choice creates.
The story told in the Bible depicts the dangerous result of jealousy and anger between two brothers. God asks Cain and Abel to both bring a sacrifice. Abel brought his sacrifice to God the way that God requested, while Cain didn’t and his sacrifice was rejected. As a result, Cain became angered and projected that anger onto Abel, eventually killing his brother. In order to rationalize and continue the injustice of slavery, white slave owners used the concept of the ‘rejected brother’ to validate the enslavement of Africans. But, Wheatley opposes this view by saying that even Africans who bare the “stain of Cain” can become refined and be forgiven when they accept Jesus Christ.
A parable is a “simple story used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson, as told by Jesus in the Gospels.” Parables are a form of teaching in Judaism, this is where Jesus made it a point in his ministry to gather common things that could be familiar to everyone and anyone who was wiling to hear him speak, for example bread and sheep. He made sure that the meaning of what was said was very clear in the context of His teachings. Parables in other words are an “earthly form of stories with heavenly meaning”. In Matthew (13: 13) Jesus says “Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.” This quote can be seen as Jesus’ way of communicating with his disciples, because many of them could not fully comprehend his teachings and what was being spoken. Another reason why He spoke in parables was so that “…unbelievers would be without comprehension”. Only those who were willing to follow Him and allow Him into their hearts, trusting in Him would understand His ways. His main deal was to be able to teach people, and hopefully in teaching them they would learn an d pass down what was taught to others. Just like in our society now and when it comes to books, magazines, etc Jesus used such things as words, pictures, and stories to help everyone learn and understand things in a certain way, because everyone learns differently he took that into consideration.
In book 4 of the Bible the first brother story takes place. It is one of deceit and competition over receiving better blessings from God. This is the story of Cain and
It can be so easy to take one simple look at someone and become so immune to the things in which we have. When it comes to jealousy, we can easily lose sight of the good in which we have inherited for ourselves. It is sad to watch someone only place themselves in worse situations due to their idea that other people have it better than them. It is often easy to desire to be exactly as someone else, which can damage your self image. Jealousy is so prideful, and can hurt one so easily. When the older son saw his brother and knew of the rejoicing that came with his homecoming, the Bible says, “And he was angry, and would not go in unto him: therefore came his father out, and entreated him” (line 28). When his father made the discovery that his older son was not accepting towards his younger brother, his father was very disappointed. He began to scold him, and tried reasoning with him. The father tried to point out that his brother was finally home and was no longer lost, trying to get his older son to realize the importance of the homecoming of his sibling, rather than focusing on himself
Sibling rivalry is not new; the story of Joseph is an example of it. Joseph was the baby of the family which made his father show favoritism. Joseph’s brothers saw clearly that their father loved Joseph more because at 17years old he received a coat specially woven for him. This brought discord between Joseph and his brothers which led them to reject Joseph and plan to murder him. As a result of disowning Joseph, they sold him into slavery.
