Paramedic Turning Point

Transitioning from middle school to high school now college. Hardships and victories I have experienced it all. I have gone from the shy student to one of the most involved and active student in my school.

Clipboard and stethoscope in hand, I walked toward the double doors that flashed emergency in bright red letters above. It was my first clinical shift as an EMT student, and first day jitters flittered around in my stomach, I had no idea what to expect. However, I was not expecting to witness the fragility of life. About a half an hour into my shift the rapid response alarm blared through the emergency room. I turned to my preceptor and quizzically asked what this meant. “A rapid response is a patient who is in need of immediate medical care and intervention. As an EMT who is part of the rapid response team you will be expected to assist with vitals and chest compressions. Let’s head toward the recess room, and I’ll explain more there.” Eventually, we reached the recess room, and the rapid response team was already there preparing for the arrival of the patient. A nurse was on the phone with the firefighters that were bringing the patient in. Seconds later she announced “It’s a STEMI”. Then fright ran through my veins. A STEMI is medical jargon for a segment elevation on an EKG. In other words the patient’s coronary artery is completely occluded. The patient is suffering from a heart attack. Prior to this, I had never seen someone who was having a heart attack. However, the thing that terrified me the most was that I knew I would be expected to perform chest compressions. I had only ever performed chest compressions on a dummy.

After the men came back they said they called an ambulance to take me to the hospital. Ten minutes later, the paramedics came in and got be and we left. On the way to the hospital one of paramedics asked what I did to my foot.

Invasive Cardiovascular Technicians are an integral part of the healthcare setting. The discipline takes many years of learning and dedication to do well. It also requires individuals who are competent, skillful, knowledgeable, and open to saving the lives of others. Invasive Cardiovascular Technicians are knowledgeable in anatomy, physiology, pathology, cardiovascular pharmacology, basic and advanced electrocardiography and electrophysiology, physics, hemodynamics, and radiology (). They are also skilled in IV administration, diagnostic cardiac catheterizations, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, angioplasty, stents, and vital sign monitoring (). The purpose of a Cardiovascular Technicians is to assist the cardiologist with data formation and collection and to aid in interventional and diagnostic procedures. Cardiovascular Technicians are trained and responsible to treat patients who go into cardiac arrest or who experience other complications. And under a physician, an invasive cardiovascular technician is also responsible for administering cardiovascular medications to patients.

A girl, Lisa, a thin, brown eye, black hair, fifteen year old girl who was in tenth grade who is hoping to be a paramedic. She still has a decide where to get that degree to be a paramedic. Lisa was reading a book on the right hand side of the pilot was screaming in fear knowing she wouldn’t survive. Then moments later, the pilot was down. Lisa quickly snatched the wheel and flew the plane. She grabbed the radio and said, “Is anyone there? Anyone? HELP ME!” Moments later she get a response.

Many turning points have occurred in my life, but I would say one really sticks out for me. This was when my granddad died in 2010. I talked about this event and how it affected my life in a thought piece earlier this year, but I thought this would be a good opportunity to elaborate on such a life changing event.

Another study in the UK compared paramedics and cardiologists. In the study paramedics received two days intensive training in interpretation of a 12 lead ECG followed by consolidation in the field. When the results were compiled it showed “that there was no significant difference between the two groups in recognition of ST segment elevation.” (Johnston S, Brightwell R & Ziman M, (2006))

The human heart has a special characteristic, it has its own electrical impulse, which allows it to beat normally outside of the human body as long as it has sufficient oxygen levels. The term cardiology refers to the medical branch which focuses on disease and irregularities of the heart. A cardiologist focuses on the individual area of the body that is the heart and these doctors focus on preventing and treating illnesses of the whole heart or single vessels or arteries. Technology in all medical fields are constantly improving and becoming reliable. Within the past two decades there has been a multitude of advancements in the field of cardiology.

The hearts role is to pump oxygenated blood to every cell in the body by having a continuous beat. Throughout time the heart has created mystery, however current technology has solved most of the mystery, there still remains an enchantment and eagerness to learn more.

A life changing moment for me was when I made the transition from junior college to VCU. I struggled academically my first two semesters. As a result, I was declared academically ineligible and placed on academic warning by the University at the conclusion of my junior year. Unbeknownst to me, I had a learning disability I was not aware of until this point. With my advisors and coaches now aware of my situation, they provided me with the academic support and resources I needed to succeed academically. It took a lot of time and a great deal of patience

Throughout my life, I’ve had many turning points, whether it’s something I could control or not. Sometimes, the decision you make can cause a turning point in your life. Whether it is a good or bad decision, it’s something you have to live with. Many times, in my life I’ve made the wrong decision, but I’ve also made many good decisions that have made my life better. The biggest turning point in my life was because of a decision I made mostly on my own.
