The qualities I appreciate most about a specific convention is the use of satire. Satire is “the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues,” satire is used all around us today from being used in standup comedy to television, magazines, and newspaper, also to social media in the likes of Instagram, Facebook, and Vine. The best type of satire, in my opinion, is when the person ridiculing the subject matter does it in a form of affection. Unfortunately, affection is not always used and people who are public figures are those who get harsh criticism in the form of satire. Since public figures are looked at as being perfect, beautiful, or having it all together, this makes them the biggest target for satire. …show more content…
Furthermore, some of the first uses of satire were from ancient Greek satyr plays and from some of the works of Shakespeare, this form of comedy has been around for a long time and is, “closely linked to parody and can often discredit an individual of their public worth or value. This is where political satire is of such importance,” Bertolt Brecht a german who was a poet, playwright, and theatre director of the 20th century, made use of satire through political issues. The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, is an example of one of his plays where he used political propaganda. In The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, a fictional play, it takes place in Chicago of 1941, the main character is Arturo Ui, a mobster who attempts to be in control and have power by controlling the cauliflower

In chapter 7 of Andrew Stott’s, Comedy 2nd Edition, Stott mentions the term “satire”. A satire is a “parodic tone that should not be confused with a straightforward correspondence with an author’s views”, (Stott 156). A satire is often compared to the sarcasm that shows itself in a situation that occurs. Saturday Night Live (SNL) could be an example of expressing the initial meaning of a satire. A specific example of an occurrence of satire comedy in SNL is the three presidential debates between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.
So the last two newsletters, in my opinion, were a pleasant diversion and definitely cathartic for me! Soaring rhetoric and amazing separation of independent clauses with perfectly placed semi-colons, passing references to Zero Mostel, zombie apocalypses, orange urine, loan calculations; plus, an obscure Bible reference, regarding seed sowing and free range donkeys. However, no matter how high you fly, someone always seems to be there ready, willing, and eager to shoot you down, and when the other shoe finally does drop from the sky, it usually lands in a steaming pile of doggy doo! So back to the old grindstone W.E. go; but, before unflinchingly diving headlong into number two, let me
Analyse the passage (John the Savage in the hospital); discern presentation of satire and how it is wrought.
A book where everything is backwards, where everything stirs away from reality and does not make a whole lot of sense when it comes to relativity. The main character Arthur Dent is being targeted by these unprepossessing aliens to demolish his house to make a intergalactic bypass, when moments later they are going to destroy the earth. All Arthur can worry about is his house when the earth is going to end. In reality a normal human would be worried about surviving. A smart computer built by Deep thought detects that the answer to the ultimate question is Forty-Two, now all of the humans are insanely muddled as to why the answer is Forty-Two. Mice are now ruling over humans when we have experimented with them for years, the mice are the rulers over the humans and are experimenting on them. Satire is used in many ways throughout this book, but there are only a few that really express how today's society is ruled over.
However, the experience of the spectators was different at this play. The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui was written to produce an experience known as the alienation effect. The alienation effect, in the words of Brecht himself, is “to make the spectator adopt an attitude of inquiry and criticism in his approach to the incident” (Brecht, 136). In other words, Brecht aimed to “separate” the viewer from the plot and sensation of the play in order to allow them to truly understand and analyze the message. In Arturo Ui, Brecht instigated the alienation effect in multiple ways, the first of which was introducing the play. An announcer at the beginning makes it clear to the audience what they are about to see and what the ending will be. The use of an actor within the play teaching Arturo Ui how to act and the theatricality of the words was meant to further alienate the audience. The cast and crew of the SMTD also
Freedom of speech is one of the most important rights that an American possesses. Satire should not be censored until it crosses the line into hate speech. Hate speech is aggressive and negative language directed towards a group of people due to something such as race, religion, or culture. Kuruvilla details recent issues with hate speech by writing, “recent prosecutions include a white supremacist convicted of sending a threatening anti-Semitic tweet to a lawmaker.” Hate speech, unfortunately, is not a rare occurrence. It is seen on social media, such as Twitter, and anti-Islamic hate in particular has become a recent issue. It is important to understand where satire ends and where hateful speech begins.
, the short story writer George Saunders uses realism which he commonly uses through out his short stories. His dark humor and satire give a sense in the world we live in. With the usage of first and third person, Saunders often practices a running narration going on in the characters’ minds to show both the action and reaction of the character to what is happening. He portrays America as cartoonlike. In the collection, a few short stories that best exhibit how he uses these literary devices are “Puppy”, Victory Lap”, and “Sticks”.
Many see propaganda as undermining reason. Propaganda works with the emotions to get a mass to do a certain action. Since propaganda tries to remain hidden, are there any in the world who see it and try to uncover such propaganda? Satirical television and radio shows as well as newspapers challenge the conceptions of which we take for granted and of which are propaganda. How does satire function in relation to propaganda?
