In the novel, Parrot in the Oven, written by Victor Martinez. Manny Hernandez, a fourteen-year-old boy, through a series of life events and struggles faces a constant dilemma of finding himself while growing up struggling with an alcoholic father, a vanishing brother, a sister absorbed into her own world, and a distracted mother. This contributes to the conditions he grows up to, such as poverty, pressure, and repressed love. Manny believes that he could obtain what he wants by accompanying a gang, but then realizes that it was not him and decided to make decisions that benefited him. One way Martinez uses actions to create character development is when Manny tries to stop his father from shooting his mother. In the novel, Parrot in the Oven, Manny attempts to stop his father, “I was behind him all the way, picking up and putting things back the best I could, trying not to trample over Pedi, awake and helping Dad look for the bullets. I was begging him to please respect reason, (56, Martinez). This shows how actions revealed Manny is reasonable. This illustrates how Manny’s actions can reveal much about his character. Another way Martinez uses actions to create character development is when Manny chases Eddie down the road. In the same novel, as Manny chases Eddie, “In the instant of trying to call out to Eddie, everything changed. It was like I’d finally seen my own face and recognized myself; recognized who I really should be.” (210, Martinez). This shows how actions of a character can reveal deeper emotion within a character and Manny learns he wants to make his own decisions. Readers discover who Manny really is and this leads to character development.
