PART 14 Mac left before the Sheriff or anyone else got to the center as he wanted to see how passable the trail was and if he could take the any vehicles up the hill. It was the smallest vehicle they had and it might make it. In several places, the trail wasn’t wide enough to take the quad so he gave up the quad and walked up. The distance to the site Jackie described wasn’t far. Damn, he didn’t want her on this trail in the first place, not because he knew anything was wrong with it, but because he had three kids of his own and on a hot day like this, they’d want to be in the creek, not walking beside it. He did find the back packs but didn’t touch them as they would be considered as evidence by the Sherriff. As he walked further up the hill he thought he saw the mummy Jackie described hanging from a tree. That’s as far as he went as he remembered the grisly horrors that lay ahead as Jackie had described them and didn’t relish being alone when he found them. Mac was a pretty tough guy but he felt that this would turn the stomach of the most macho of them all. He decided to ride back and wait for the Sheriff’s officers to get to the Visitor’s Center. He would lead them up and do as they requested. He didn’t want to disturb any evidence at the site either. It was going to be a mess up there as so many people would be coming up, plus they had to cordon off the trail and the entire area until the investigation was over as well as block. He didn’t want to go up with anyone so hopefully they could handle everything without him, but he suspected that he would be there too. Mac had a roll of yellow ‘caution’ tape with him so he used it to cordon off as much of the area as he could to keep people out and to not disturb the area as he was afraid that other hikers would walk
