Part Four: Counter Arguments
Many people criticize the proposal of new locks and suggest that there are other methods that will accomplish the same goal, however none are quite as effective or immediate as installing new locks. Other defensive measures can be put into place, such as cameras, but these measures will not be as immediate or effective of a solution as better locks. Cameras may catch the perpetrator the morning after, when the robbery and break-in is discovered, but having solid doors and secure locks will prevent the crime from happening in the first place. If the criminal can not enter the school, the people inside can have a better peace of mind that they are protected along with their valuable equipment.

Alternatively, the school could salvage locks that are still functional but not up to par, and sell them to institutions with even worse locking systems so both MHS and the institution may benefit. Locks that are in too harsh of a condition could be sold for scrap and that metal would be recycled for other uses. Other critics say that replacing all of the locks is not necessary, but rather using a different type of handle would be more effective. New “cup handles” enable users to open an unlocked door, but make it more difficult to yank the door open because it does not allow one to grip the door. First, all doors would have to be taken into account to determined how many require new interior locks and cup handle installation. Through research, it has been determined that 60 doors on the exterior of the school need new cup handles, and 231 interior classroom doors need locks that lock from the inside. (Campus Map) The next step is determining how much it will cost and where that money will come from. Through calculations, it is estimated that it will cost roughly three thousand dollars for materials. Each year, the school is given money from the district to improve school defences, so that money could be used for this purpose. Along with this funding fundraising is also an easy way to obtain the funds required, as well as selling old, broken locks as scrap. After the funds are collected, the school can buy these materials in bulk and install them over the summer so students, teachers, and faculty are not interfering with or being limited by the
