Part One: Give some examples of what Thai people consider to be confusing or annoying or rude behavior of tourists Greeting: Instead of shaking hands, Thai greet each other with “WAI”. Foreigners are not expected to initiate the “WAI” gesture, but Thais can see it as an insult if the foreigners do not return the “WAI”. The tourists who are more familiar with Thai’s gesture, they would automatically “WAI” in return to show respect to the person they are greeting. But majority of the newly visiting tourists they are unaware of what it means to do the “WAI” gesture, how it is so important in Thai culture, and how to do it properly. Eating: Thai people like to share things especially food. Thai people like to go out and eat with friends. One of the Thai habits when eating includes ordering many dishes and put them in the center for sharing. While for foreigner, they have a habit of ordering a few dishes for themselves because they do not want to share their food. They only order the food that they want to eat. But for Thai people eating together and sharing is a fun and sociable things to do. Thai people may find foreigners are not sociable because they don’t share things such as food. Pointing Fingers & Head: In Thai culture, it’s not polite to point fingers at other people faces. Point fingers if often use in arguments which can even lead up to further problems. Foreigners do not know this so sometimes they point the finger to Thai people which can cause Thais to feel irritated. Thais do not like to let others to play with their head because head is believe to be a “high” thing and very honorable. It’s also not good to touch the head of the elder, because of his seniority or else anyone who does will be view as disrespecting the senior. Tourists who may mistakenly pad on a Thai person head, either younger or older, raise their feet above the elders head etc. will be view as rude by Thais as well.
